Ketchikanvs. BarrowFor me Barrow wins easily. The warmer temps are definitely not worth that nightmarish rainfall.

Yep Ketchikan. No brainer.
Plus: "Barrow, like many communities in Alaska, has enacted a "damp" law, prohibiting the sale of alcoholic beverages."

Fuck that. Same thing happens in the Northern Territory of Australia, alcohol is banned in many communities and where it is legal, it is expensive and the laws draconian.

Barrow is probably worse than Norilsk, besides the pollution in Norilsk. At least in Norilsk you can drink as much as you want and they actually have SOMEWHAT of a summer there!
Ketchikan is an easy choice. Next!

Barrow is a mostly native town like Northern Territory; it even voted to change its name to something in the local language unprouncable Utqiagvik. Even if the locals have alcohol, at least it's not poor, they manage to make money for themselves from businesses dealing with oil and other resource extraction. Even with decent income, with no road access to the outside world and the nearest city of any size 1000 miles away; everything must be really expensive.

UtqiaΔ‘vik has been the official name since December 2016 and the population is about 60% native. About 8% below the federal poverty line which is good by rural AK standards. Cost of living is really high so the actual poverty line is probably much higher.

Triple whammy. Isolated tiny village, high cost of living, polar climate with darkness 1/3rd of the year. Death by a 1000 cuts is honestly a viable alternative

Kinda cruel to ban alcohol in a place like this, as one of the few ways to deal with such a climate is to get shitfaced and pretend you don't live there.

Looks like everyone else on here is willing to expect excessive precipitation for better temps. Wasnβt expecting it to be so lopsided, figured Ketchikan was cold and wet enough that some people might choose barrows.

Barrow. The never-ending cold rain (it can literally rain for a month straight) and no winter in Ketchikan would drive me mad. At least Barrow gets glorious winters and extreme light conditions. I also like the tundra scenery.
