Ew. Looks like a third mild winter in a row for me then. The 1st picture is what a typical La Nina pattern is like in thee US during the Winter, not to confuse it with the actual forecasts for the upcoming Winter.

One thing that stands out to me on that map is that there's a marked concentration of warm water in the north of the world and cold water in the south. Somewhat unusual as a pattern, though probably more or less random. Ew. Looks like a third mild winter in a row for me then. The 1st picture is what a typical La Nina pattern is like in thee US during the Winter, not to confuse it with the actual forecasts for the upcoming Winter. Well, a mild winter is far from guaranteed. 2011 was one of the most severe winters in living memory in the eastern U.S. and that was a first-year La Nina winter, and the consensus beforehand even said it would be mild! The cold waters now look east-based, which was also true in late 2010. I'm not saying it's necessarily going to be cold for you next winter, but I am saying the jury is very much still out on what kind of winter season it will be.

You mean 2010-2011, right? 2011-2012 was painfully mild. I live in northwestern Missouri, by the way, so if we get a 2013-2014 pattern I'll be right in the middle of it lol.

www.bom.gov.au/climate/enso/outlook/Still on El Niño watch but that was as of July 31st. Since then, the SSTs have cooled rapidly and significantly. BOM's next update is later today (the 14th). The current thinking is that 18/19 will be another neutral winter season, which is usually very good for the west coast. Anemic:

That normally spells trouble for us down the road in winter...think back to 13-14, 14-15 or 15-16.

North Atlantic off of New England and Atlantic Canada look hot; didn't realize the sea was that warm Still very warm waters off the NE coast. What's more interesting to me though is the huge area of warm water in the northern Pacific centered over the Bering. Equatorial Pacific is looking mild still.

The at BOM raised the El Niño outlook to 'alert' from 'watch', but not without reason. www.bom.gov.au/climate/enso/outlook/3.4 has risen and it most likely won't go down significantly, if at all, but I would be surprised if it continues to rise:

Coldest/snowiest winter since 1992-93 incoming for us? Maybe January will finally deliver for the first time in over two decades.
