This could be an interesting climate battle. My vote is for Alice Springs, which is a solid C climate. Comfortable dew points in summer even with the hot ambient temperatures and really pleasant winters. Having said that, I'd guess many people will choose Townsville for precipitation alone. Let's see...

Alice Springs for being drier and more continental and just more interesting in general.

Alice Springs for being drier and more continental and just more interesting in general. Given the kind of precipitation you prefer, what grade would you give it? Above or below average? (the C/D isotherm)

Townsville has better rainfall, but nights are so much warmer that I have to pick Alice Springs. Alice springs has fewer months that are too hot and more cool weather.

Townsville can also be a dry hellhole depending on the weather patterns in summer. I think 2 or 3 years ago it got less than 400mm for the year.
Hard one but probably only just Townsville because winters are absolutely perfect and usually pretty sunny unlike much of the QLD coast. Also always the possibility of a cyclone to make it interesting. Alice Springs gets fuck all interesting weather throughout the year, expect for the odd high intensity rain event or dust storms (if you can count the latter as interesting)

I didn't even have to look at the climateboxes to vote for Alice Springs.

Townsville, fuckaaaaaaan!
Much better rainfall. Interesting that itβs so much drier than Innisfail which is not far away, however. Anyone here know why?

I'll take an oven over a steam bath so Alice Springs it is. More relief in the winter is also nice.

Alice Springs, without a shadow of a doubt! Also, the Wiki box for Alice Springs is just not representative enoughβthe real record is 47.5Β° C, just so you know. I should probably get to adding the hotter records from the post officeβthe climate box will look nicer and more variable with these hotter, more epic records: www.bom.gov.au/climate/averages/tables/cw_015540_All.shtml

Thank me later, lads! Left the averages the same, but added the more epic records. Also, some fun trivia: record lowest maximum = 6.7Β° C in July 1901 (Post Office); 7.0Β° C in July 2010 (Airport). Can certainly get wintry at times, despite its northerly latitude!

Quite tough choice. I think Townsville may have the better temps, but is relatively devoid of storms. Alice Springs, while having agreeable temps, is one of the coolest climates in inland Australia due to the altitude, but gets an absolute fuck ton of storms, way more than Townsville.
Might have to go with Alice Springs, more variety, more storms, still very good summers. But it would hurt seeing everywhere else in inland Australia being hotter. It would be like living in Melbourne all over again.
Fun fact: Renmark averages less rain than Alice Springs. But that obviously makes sense, due to the rediculous frequency of storms in Alice Springs, Fuckan.

Townsville hardly ever gets thunderstorms. Do not be an uninformed drug addict, kid. The coastal regions of far north Queensland are one of the LEAST lightning-prone areas in the entirety of Australia. Yes, they get heavy showers, but lightning is relatively rare. On the ranges and to the west, thunderstorms are far, FAR more prominent. Mark my words, Alice Springs gets far more thunder and lightning than Townsville. This is not wrong, get a clue.

No, actually you are wrong. Look at this lightning map of Australia.

Alice Springs easily. Wavey made a good point, Townsville's prone to ridiculous droughts.

No AJ you are wrong kid. Alice Springs gets more storms than Townsville. True fact like how AGW is bullshit. Don't like it, move to Townsville and eat some ants while Alice Springs is getting a light show.
