no rock music thread so putting this here since 70s was the peak decade for rock imo. Strewthless Yahya Sinwar Giorbangulybest American rock guitarist is Jimi Hendrix. Beach Boys maybe going by older ones, don't think the Doors deserve #1 but def in top 10, the Eagles are too lame. maybe Aerosmith but don't think that they're good. Bob Dylan isn't a rock band. Britain way overrepresent for its size vs the USA.

Guns N' Roses ought to be a contender, yet nobody seems to have mentioned them. Bon Jovi often get overlooked, pretty deep catalogue, but often dismissed as an 80's glam rock fad. Lynyrd Skynyrd had a good distinct sound.
Fleetwood Mac would be near the top for both countries, but have members from both.

nei lynrd skynrdddddddd ! Their lyrical imagination and rock ballads are our best answer to led zeppelin. Free bird is americas stairway to heaven ! If we included 80s rock and forward think American bands would dominate the scene (metal bands like metallica then the grunge era of the 90s!, oooh and dont forgoet red hot chili peppers, stone temple pilots etc) .

The Eagles are lame. Jimi Hendrix definitely one of the best
My local favorites are The Ramones. Also Journey, The Strokes Styx, Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins. Also KC and the Sunshine Band if you consider them rock
UK is way better for its size. UK also had New Wave which is my favorite musical style

I always took Guns N' Roses as America's answer to Zeppelin, similar sound, similar look. They were like an 80's Zeppelin, also had some great ballads like November Rain. Don't think America ever found an answer to The Beatles, The Stones or Pink Floyd. Styles began to diverge in the 80's. America went more towards glam rock, then grunge and alt rock. UK went more towards New Wave, then Britpop and Indie. Don't think one was better than the other, just different tastes.

But of an aside but mostly related due to the amount of rock acts featured.
The 20 best-selling artists of all time:
#1 The Beatles (UK) #2 Elvis Presley (US) #3 Michael Jackson (US) #4 Elton John (UK) #5 Madonna (US) #6 Led Zeppelin (UK) #7 Rihanna (Bar) #8 Pink Floyd (UK) #9 Eminem (US) #10 Taylor Swift (US) #11 Mariah Carey (US) #12 Eagles (US) #13 Queen (UK) #14 Whitney Houston (US) #15 Celine Dion (Can) #16 AC/DC (Aus) #17 The Rolling Stones (UK) #18 Garth Brooks (US) #19 Drake (US) #20 Ed Sheeran (UK)
A bunch of interesting observations to make.
Obviously coming from an English-speaking country is a massive advantage since the English language market is the biggest.
The UK seems to produce bigger bands, the US produces more solo acts. I've heard some say this is because of greater individualism in American culture.
Extra impressive that the Beatles are #1 considering that they had the shortest recording career of any act on the list, only lasting 7 years. Mind boggling that their sound evolved so often in such a short time.
The Rolling Stones are surprisingly low, which shows that the whole Beatles vs Stones thing is overblown, in a commercial sense the Beatles never had any serious rivals in the 60's, nobody even came close to challenging their dominance at any point.
Eagles the only American band to make the list.
Queen probably the most successful act that never truly "broke America".
Every decade since the 50's is represented.

Can't believe Queen is only number 14, wow. I thought they would be top 5 for sure, maybe even top 3 Never truly broke America aside from a few hits, they were seen as too theatrical, and were practically blacklisted after the "I Want To Break Free" video that offended a lot of people over there. Didn't really regain traction there until after Freddie Mercury died. Were it different they'd probably be threatening the top 3.
