A big hit. Captured the spirit of the times. Talking about 2020? We haven't reached 1980's unemployment, even with Covid. Although it would have seen normal to

rozenn , my uncle's favourite band. A song about the coal mines being forced to close. Caused lots of upheaval across northern England and Wales. Famously led to some huge riots against the police. A lot of those areas are yet to recover.

A lot of those areas are yet to recover. The transition was smoother in France, most mines were already closed by then. The mining areas haven't really recovered either. Here's a nostalgic 80's song about the coal mining culture in northern France. Same decade, rather different style! Guessing the few places shown in the video could pass for decaying mining cities in Britain:

Guessing the few places shown in the video could pass for decaying mining cities in Britain: The unions were very strong here, too strong. Held out for massive pay rises, brought the country to its knees in the 70's, destroyed our industry, which was on par with Germany. Other industries were losing money and being subsidised by the government, coal mining, for instance. Then Thatcher came along, she may have been the first female PM, but was easily the toughest, she did some things that were necessary, but made it too personal with the Union leaders like Arthur Skargill, and the war tore the country in two. The wounds still haven't healed. You won't find many Tory supporters in cities like Liverpool, which she advocated "managed decline" for. The most divisive PM in our history, but as I said, it made for good music

Yeah, Blair did take a lot of the credit for what she and John Major (an underrated PM because he was so boring) had created, then jumped ship before the banking crisis, which he and they had also played a part in. Too much deregulation.

Speaking of the Pet Shop Boys, I really like their cover of Always on my Mind:

A French singer asked her to collaborate for a cover in the 2000s. Speaking of the Pet Shop Boys, I really like their cover of Always on my Mind: I didn't know that was a cover. Tbh it's also the first version I heard.

jgtheone SIR Barry Gibb. Not many living musicians have that title. I think only Elton John, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and Andrew Lloyd Webber share the title currently.

Fun fact: Ricky Gervais made New Wave music in the 80's. And it's actually not bad.
