I grew up with four channels here in Britain (I'm 31), it sounds like nothing now but it still seemed just as easy to find something worth watching as it is now with 100+ channels. It also meant TV companies could experiment more and had more money to produce their own stuff because everything was more or less guaranteed high ratings.

Crazy to think until the late 80's there were just 5/6 channels. Then it quickly jumped into the hundreds once satellite was launched.

There were only four on terrestrial TV, and ITV was the only one on 24 hours a day until into the 90s. It took until the mid 90s until having cable/satellite TV became the norm, I think my family first got it in 1997.

We also had S4C here since the early 80's, but most people had no idea what they were saying. Sky launched in 1990, but I assume most people didn't have it until the late 90's.

Yeah in the UK Channel 4 launched in 1982 & Channel 5 didn't launch until 1997. TV was better though despite there being less channels, ITV was completely local in every different region (mine was TVS/Meridian) & each region showed different things, now ITV is all owned by one company & the only local thing is watered down regional news. I remember coming home from school & watching CBBC until 5:30 when Neighbours came on & that was it for kids TV. Good times.

TV was better, especially with comedies. They're crap now because nobody is allowed to be offended.

Even shows from 10/15 years ago, like 'Little Britain' wouldn't be allowed now...
