I'd never heard of it before but I came across an index for comparing aridity across different climates on tutiempo.net: It seems pretty easy to work out, annual precipitation in mm /(annual temperature in degrees C + 10), so in my case for last year: 1198 / (8.8 + 10) = 63.71. Obviously I live in a wet climate but I'm surprised to see it so far off the scale, even if our average year only gets 55.7. I tried it for a wet summer/cold and dry winter climate like Vladivostok and got virtually the same score as Bingley, 55.9. A few other cities in different climate types: Madrid: 16.9 (arid) New York: 55.6 (wet) Darwin: 48.5 (wet) Calgary: 29.0 (semi-arid) Thoughts? Looks reasonable enough for some climate types but I can't believe New York feels as wet as Bingley.

London = 28.1
In 1997 it was 20.09, narrowly avoiding being arid. In 2014 it was 38.15, subhumid.

Rochester is 45.8. No surprise itโs in the humid category.
Fort Collins is 20.5 which is semi-arid, narrowly avoids the arid category.

Tucson is a 9.8 so straddling โsteppeโ and โsubdesertโ. This is just an oversimplified version of the Koppen aridity equation.

1,579 mm / 34.2 C = 46.2; humid
Dallol is 0.5 mm (rough estimate) / 44.6 C = 0.01; hyper arid
Oymyakon 215 mm / -5.5 C = -39.1; how does it work for places with negative annual temps?

Probably biotemperature, like the Holden Life Zone system. With biotemperature, any month at or below freezing is 0, so the only way an annual average could be zero is if the climate is Polar Ice Cap. Plus it's known that evapotranspiration is nil in subpolar and polar climates, that's why the soil gets water logged (think muskeg/peat bog)

Portland 1981-2010 is 40.82 so close to the border of humid and subhumid. Interestingly 1990-2019 actually got slightly wetter at 41.42.
Portland 2018 was 29.37. Semiarid bros jajajajaja

42.7 for Bangkok. I guess one problem I see is that climates with dry summers are seen as more arid than they are - although not much rain might fall annually, when it does it does so during the period of least evapotranspiration (winter). And conversely for climates with wet summers.

1981-2010 averages in Vรตru 41.3. This is almost the same as in the European capital, Brussels (41.6 there). In Estonia, lowest on SW coast 34.4, highest on NE upland 46.5. It's interesting, I hadn't heard of it. It shows oceanic places in general with a lower index and continental places with a higher one. Moscow for instance is 44.7.
