Starting just over the Queensland border at Stanthorpe ( in the Granite Belt, and Queenslands coldest town ) running down the Great Dividing Ranges, through the New England districts, the Central Tableland, west of Sydney, the Austalian Alps in southern NSW, over the border into the Victorian high country all the way to the outlier Grampions in the western districts at Mt William. The common theme is altitude ( ok, modest, but relevent to Aussies ), as it generally means regular severe frosts, and snow. Not so common in the northern latitudes, but certainly does happen, even in Queensland.
Stanthorpe, Queenslands coldest town....811m asl and 28.66*S
Guyra, NSW, the highest gazetted town in NSW, 1330m and 30.22*S
A long time ago I went to College at nearby Armidale..... her's some pics of a big snow dump in late June 1977.
Walcha, NSW....another one of those below the radar cold hell holes in the New England Ranges, 1035m and 31*S
Sunny Corner, NSW, Central Tablelands/Blue Mountains cold spot
Mt Boyce, NSW... representative of the high grounds of the City of the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney.
Oberon, NSW, a favourite snow chasing spot to nearby Shooter's Hill ( 1355m and Mt Bindo 1363m )
My pic from mid Oct 2010
Mt Ginini, ACT. High up in the Brindabellas, lovely snow capped views from Canberra
Charlotte Pass, NSW, high up in the Snowy Mountains/Australian Alps
Thredbo Top Station, NSW
Thredbo Village, NSW, a major ski resort
A couple of my pics from Oct 2010, Dead Horse Gap, and a view of the Main Range from the Alpine Way
Falls Creek, Victoria....part of the Bogong High Plains
Mt Hotham, Victoria...popular ski resort.
Mt Buller, Victoria....another ski resort reasonably close to Melbourne.
Baw Baw Plateau, Victoria, lowish altitude, but high latitude and heavy winter precipitation makes for a ski field close to Melbourne.
MT William. Victoria....the Great Divide peters out in Western Victoria, with the Grampions and Mt William being the last of the high country in the state. The Grampions rise above the flat farming lowlands of the Wimmera near Horsham
