Inspired by the shoutbox conversation this morning, what are your favorite cloud type(s)? My choices are: 1. Cumulonimbus 2. Cumulus (towering) 3. Altocumulus 4. Cirrus 5. Cirrostratus The worst types are stratus, nimbostratus. Fuck 'em, and that goes without saying! I'll include pics of each cloud type/species (not mine obviously), and when commenting you may either generalize, or specify which species you like in particular, and the species you dislike as well. Cumulus fractus: Cumulus humilis: Cumulus mediocris: Cumulus congestus: Cumulonimbus calvus: Cumulonimbus capillatus: Stratus fractus: Stratus nebulosus: Stratocumulus castellanus: Stratocumulus stratiformis: Stratocumulus floccus: Volutus (stratocumulus or rarely altocumulus; roll clouds): Nimbostratus: Altocumulus stratiformis: Altocumulus castellanus: Altocumulus floccus: Altocumulus lenticularis (lenticular clouds): Altostratus: Cirrus castellanus: Cirrus fibratus: Cirrus floccus: Cirrus spissatus: Cirrus uncinus: Cirrocumulus castellanus: Cirrocumulus floccus: Cirrocumulus lenticularis: Cirrocumulus stratiformis: Cirrostratus fibratus: Cirrostratus nebulosus:

Cumulus (esp. congestus) and cumulonimbus are my favorites. Lenticular clouds look really cool too! Honorable mention goes to roll clouds. Don't have really a last favorite, but it's just kinda sad when you get a blanket of stratus that just hangs around for days on end, especially if you don't get any precipitation out of it.

Depends on the season. For the high sun season (spring and summer), towering cumulus/cumulonimbus are my favorite. During the low sun season (autumn/winter) stratiform clouds are more suitable. I want winter to have plenty of clear, sunny days though.

Nimbostratus, in all seasons. By far the darkest and most ominous cloud—often associated with cold fronts, and the only useful type of cloud. All the others either 1. bring little to no precip, or 2. bring very localised, unreliable blink-or-you'll-miss-it convective precip (a la cumulonimbus). Particularly beautiful when in a pre-frontal stage, as shown in my photo below; love that silvery-black colour

Oh man, where to start? It's so hard to answer a question like this, since it depends on the season or just my mood in general. For summer, I want a diurnal cumulus field to be the main cloud type, developing into cumulonimbus on about half the days. One problem though, I don't even know the type of cloud that is responsible for the summer marine showers we get. I really like those, but they always always occur at night so I never get a good idea of what the clouds look like. They don't produce thunder. As for winter, no cloud or a thin cirrus should be the norm. But I love the look of those fractus clouds at the tail end of a passing front. When you can see crystal clear sky in the distance while sitting under a blanket of stratus, with those last fractus clouds moving one million miles per hour. Nothing better than that transition. Stratocumulus are beautiful in moderation, in any season really. I wouldn't want to live in a climate defined by that type of cloud though. Thick high cloud is the worst IMO. Altostratus is the absolute worst, and I'm not really too fond of altocumulus or cirrocumulus either.

Depends on the season. Towering cumulus/cumulonimbus in spring and summer, cirrus in fall, and thick stratus layers in winter.

That would be Nimbostratus—the only cloud that produces reliable, widespread precip.

In this area, nimbostratus is the cloud type associated with debris rain from decaying convective storms. The cloud that produces these isolated showers that come off the ocean is cumuliform, possibly stratocumulus.

Definitely not nimbostratus knot . I’d imagine it’s some type of developed cumulus Edit: tommyFL You beat me to the punch. Didn’t see your post when I made mine.

This really depends on season for me, I don't have an overall favourite cloud type.
In winter, I quite like nimbostratus, which is the best for rain and a dreary, wintry look. In spring and fall, I enjoy cumulus and at times cumulonimbus for thunderstorms. In summer, I like dry conditions and favour the fair weather altocumulus clouds.

<Likes>- Nimbostratus (Favorite - When I want a cool/rainy day)
- Altostratus (When I want a cool/mild day in summer/winter)
- Stratus (When I want a cool/mild day in summer/winter)
- Cirrocumulus (When I want a dry day)
- Cumulus (When I want a dry day)
- Altocumulus (When I want a dry day)
<Neutral>- Cirrus
- Cirrostratus
- Stratocumulus

Cumulonimbus, but you all know that already. Second place are cumuli on their way to cumulonimbus status, followed by altocumulus castellanus as they are a sign of instability.

Cumulonimbus - especially when the sun is setting and big anvil heads create those massive sunbeams 😍. Roll clouds, lenticular clouds and Cirrus Uncinus also look very cool! I hate any kind of stratus.

Cumulus is cute.
Stratus types are dreary

Cumulonimbus of course.
Failing that, any variation of cumulus.
Failing that, cirrus.
Failing that, none.

Fog ( as in brain fog after a night on the beers followed by tequilla shots ) Otherwise this:

I prefer skies devoid of clouds, but if I had to choose one, I’ll go with Altocumulus lenticularis.

Fog ( as in brain fog after a night on the beers followed by tequilla shots ) That's me every night, regardless if I drink or not...so might as well get drunk every night.
