Yep, it really was/is a thing. Countless successful Aussie bands cut their teeth and developed their style and sound doing gigs at the local pub and club venue. Patrons and music lovers could get up close and personal with the sounds and songs, rather than be a 100m away in some souless stadium. Pub Rock is almost exclusively beat driven, designed to get the patrons up and boogying ! Here is one of the more successful bands playing in the streets of Melbourne in the mid '70's. I think I first saw them play in the tiny Murray Valley town of Cobram in 1975.
The one and only Acca Dacca !
The quintessential Pub Rock band in Australia was Çold Chisel. They never took off outside of Australia and New Zealand unfortunately, but have a cult following in Oz, with just about everyone over the age of 35 knowing the lyrics to 'Khe Sanh'. Our unofficial National Anthum.....
A Pub Rock verion of the Beatles 'Eleanor Rigby', by the band Zoot ( and a young Rick Springfield )
The classic Pub Rock genera song from 1974...'Evie' part 1 performed by former 'Easybeats' frontman Stevie Wright.
A number one hit in early 1970's charts, 'Eagle Rock' by Daddy Cool. Eveyone over 40 knows the lyrics to this one, having sung it countless times at pissy BBQ's and Karaoke nights.
'Ol 55. a retro '50's Pub Rock band....been to a few gigs 40 odd years ago.
The Ted Mulry Gang, '70's Pub Rockers

I remember Radio Birdman from my Auusie winters back in the mid 80s - particularly associate it with Jindabyne/Perisher and a mate's very shiny Monaro ......... which was sadly trashed by his angry girlfriend , after what had been an otherwise great evening out in North Sydney.
Cold Chisel gets it's fair share of play in this house.

Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs.....Thorpie was a bit of a wild man in the early '70's. The guitar riff from 3.10 onwards still gets the juices flowing.

Pubs are dying as band venues imo - very unfortunate..... why have live music when you can have pokies?

Pubs are dying as band venues imo - very unfortunate..... why have live music when you can have pokies? Yep, seems that way. I remember the boss of Sydney Engineering putting the crew up in the Indian Ocean Hotel in Scarborough, Perth about 20 years ago. We loved it as they had live bands on 4 nights a week and all day on Sundays !

Skyhooks....Aussie 'Glam Rock', so not exactly 'pub rock', although they had a huge following in the mid-late '70's
