From a 'shoutbox' discussion re the capital of Brazil ( Brasillia ) earlier today and the vagaries of climate at modest altitude and latitude deep into the Tropics. Southern Hemisphere only for comparison with these 4 sites in South America, Southern Africa and Australia. Brasillia, Brazil Latitude: 15°46′46″ S Longitude: 47°55′46″ W Elevation above sea level: 1136 m = 3727 ft. Lusaka, Zambia 15°25′S 28°17′E, with an altitude of 1,280 metres (4,200 ft) Mount Elizabeth, WA. Australia. Latitude: 16.42 °S ; Longitude: 126.10 °E ; Elevation: 546 m ; Herberton, QLD, Australia. Latitude · 17.38 South ; Longitude · 145.39 East ; Altitude · 954.00m/3129.92ft.

Easily Herberton. Temperatures are comfortable, rainfall is ample and it's the only one on the list with somewhat regular winter cold. According to the BOM it gets an average of 1.6 sub 0C minimums and 3.8 sub 2C minimums a year, which is very impressive for its latitude/altitude.

Think I'll go with Lusaka on this one, looks very comfortable, least humid of the bunch.

These are all excellent, but I'll go with Mt Elizabeth. The others might feel slightly coolish in summer considering the rain / sun. Plus Mt Elizabeth gets those epic diurnals in the winter.

They're all pretty good, just about the toss of a coin. I have a slight neg bias against Mt Elizabeth, having camped out there on a freezing night years ago ( 2c ! ) I ticked Brasilia, but as I say, they're all good climates.

WHY DO THEY ALL HAVE CRAPPY DRY SEASONS, WHYYYYYYYYYYYY also way too hot for me, all of them are a D for me Maaate, you have it arse about....they all have sensational 'dry seasons'. It is one of the greatest features of monsoonal pattern based climates, the end of the humidity and high DP's of the rainy season and having clear dry sunny days, cool, sometimes cold nights etc, tailor made for all sorts of outdoors and sporting activities. All 4 of the sites in this battle have climates modified by altitude....about as close as you can get to paradise in the Tropics !

Lusaka. Had no idea a subtropical highland climate existed in WA. Interesting find. The highest peaks of the Kimberleys top 900m asl, love to see a weather station high up in the King Leopold Ranges. Very isolated country out there, very few people live there other than a few cattle stations and blackfella communities.
