This weekend, as we've had some hot, dry, sunny days recently, I noticed that much of the unirrigated grass here has started to turn to a dull green-yellow color, as it should in any proper summer (pics of unirrigated and irrigated grass below from this weekend). However, I also saw much of the lawn irrigation systems in action during the warm, dry, sunny weather today and yesterday. This inspired this post. Embrace summer drought, and reject lawn irrigation! It is a huge waste of precious water resources, especially in climates drier than my own, plus lush grass in summer just looks bad! Save the irrigation for crops!

Green grass all the way.

Irrigation better be for growing actual crops, such as fruits and veggies than lawns. Feed the world as opposed to wasting water for petty patches of grass.

What about if you get 5 months with not a drop of rain ?

I like green grass in spring and early summer, turning golden brown in July. But totally brown, dead grass is ugly and gives off a run down, abandoned vibe. But I agree with the thread title, watering lawns is a waste of water especially in dry climates.

Golden brown grass during the summer months is beautiful, and I agree on the totally dead grass being kinda ugly and run down.

Not much. Cos this means we have to mow the lawn more often. And I do not mind a brownish grass from time to time.

Brown grass is ugly.
More importantly though, all the middle- and upper-class suburbanites of the world do not need huge extensive lawns that they barely ever use for anything anyway. That's just wasteful.

Green grass looks much nicer, but I'm also against lawn irrigation. They look out of place in dry climates anyway.

Come to think of it, I don't like perfectly manicured lawns altogether. A meadow with various flowers looks so much nicer, and is also more drought resilient.

Also better for bees bird and general biodiversity . Improves soil health as well.

No matter how hard you try New York is still a wet summer place . Lmao that first picture only looks "yellow" because its hastily cut grass that likely was cut for the first or second time and was mulched grass. Underneath the dead grass is likely super green

I don't like the grass turning brown in summer, but it happens once in a while if we get a dry stretch. Watering it seems like a waste of effort here. It stays green most of the summer if you just let it be. In a drier climate it would be even more of a waste of effort.

I prefer green grass all summer but agree that watering lawns is a waste.

No matter how hard you try New York is still a wet summer place . yea, I voted for "reject lawn irrigation" because it's unnecessary and most grasses will stay green except for 3-4 weeks in the summer. It's a waste of water, but New York is wet enough water isn't that valuable. A bit of browning of grass isn't that bad, imo
