Cool and very wet—the wettest October on record at Hunters Hill, smashing the previous 'weak record' of 247.4 mm set in 2010. A more exciting month than September with that violent frontal storm on the 13–14th. BoM Obs @ Hunters Hill (1993–2021) • Mean Maximum: 14.4 °C (−1.8 °C) • Mean Minimum: 7.3 °C (+0.1 °C) • Precipitation: 322.0 mm (370.11%)

High a degree above, low a degree below so it worked out to average. A far cry from last October's record warmth and zero freezes. This season's first freeze was on October 9th and the month recorded 7 days with lows at or below freezing.

October 2022 Summary for Madison, WIThe month was exactly average in terms of mean temperatures: 50.1 F (10.1 C). The monthly maximum and minimum were also both very close to the historical averages. The month itself, however, in true Wisconsin October fashion, is best described as "all over the place", as the coldest temperature of the month actually occurred before the warmest. A seasonable start to the month turned cold midway through the second week, with the first freeze of the season the morning of the 15th, and the first snowfall on the 17th. (Nothing stuck to the ground, but I did get to watch it fall.) A rapid warm-up late in the third week led to an excellent Indian summer period for that following weekend, and while that too ended with a bit of rain and a cold front, it didn't get especially cooler than average even afterward, and the month ended on a seasonably warm note. October was a bit unusual, however, in terms of precipitation - it was an inch and a half drier than average, and the driest October since 2005. There was no measurable precipitation at all until the 11th, and only two days with 0.1" (2.5 mm) or more. There were no thunder days in October, as we didn't get the severe storms farther east by Crunch41 that happened on the 12th. The ground was definitely very dry by the end of the month, which led to the strong radiation cooling and therefore those big diurnal ranges in the final week. The Year So Far
