John Wayne Airport, Santa Ana, California![](https://i.imgur.com/A4GIUA5.png) Normal amount of rain in December, but the year has been so dry that December sticks out like a sore thumb. Southern California was not impacted very hard by the late-December atmospheric river. December summary:
Average max: 66.6°F (19.2°C) - precisely average Average mean: 58.3°F (14.6°C) - 0.9°F (0.5°C) above average Average min: 48.3°F (9.1°C) - 1.7°F (1°C) above average Precipitation amount: 2.83 in - 0.79 in (20mm) above average Precipitation days: 10 - 3.1 above average Highest max: 80F - 26th Lowest max: 56F - 12th Highest min: 58F - 1st and 31st Lowest min: 43F - 17th and 19th Year summary:
Average max: 74.3°F (24.3°C) - 3.1F (1.7C) above average Average mean: 67.5°F (19.7°C) - 2.6°F (1.4°C) above average Average min: 59.4°F (15.2°C) - 2.2°F (1.2°C) above average Every month turned out to be above average except for November. September was particularly warm, at 7F above average. Very warm and dry year overall. Note that April's record high of 103F is currently missing. Might be redacted or under investigation.

Although it began as pretty bad start to summer, the second half of December brought calm, sunny weather, after an extended wet winter and spring. ![](https://i.imgur.com/9rORhxD.png) My other location during December: ![](https://i.imgur.com/H20ezSx.png)

Bogor PWS, around 25km/15miles to the south. Slightly higher elevation, around 700'/215m. The South Jakarta PWS rain gauge appears to be malfunctioning as of December 2022. 2022 data is only from November since it's the first month with "normal" data streak (no missing/patchy data). My actual place is generally slightly drier and warmer than Bogor. December here had a dry first half & from the second week a cold snap which saw the coldest December temperatures since 2010. We didn't get any snow here, just delightful cold rain. After the cold snap it turned much milder, but also much wetter. Torrential downpours meant the month ended up much wetter than average & 2022 as a whole saw a rediculous amount of rainfall here, just south of the highest point of the South Downs. December 2022 in Oklahoma City had an extremely potent but short-lived cold snap. On December 22, the city experienced the coldest December temperature since 1989, and the next day it experienced the coldest December high since 2008. The daytime temperatures on December 22 did not get out of the single digits, but since the cold front came thru in the wee hours of the morning, the high was recorded as 39°F (4°C) that day. Interestingly enough, the rest of the month was relatively mild, and the month wound up having near-normal temperatures overall. Sadly I was in North Carolina when the cold snap hit, and only experienced more moderate cold there. There was also a strong thunderstorm a week or two before the cold snap, which is a bit unusual for December. Some parts of the state experienced tornadoes from those storms. 2022 was the driest year since 2005, with just one hundredth of an inch less precipitation than 2016. The average temperature of 61.1°F (16.1°C) was 0.7°F (0.4°C) above the long-term (1891-2022) normal. ![](https://i.imgur.com/pxeS0vU.png) ![](https://i.imgur.com/nlF9GHR.png)

longaotian going by single month thresholds, that is strongly Mediterranean. Really nice year! It's subtropical too, the summers are decently warm, along with the winters.

Better late than never, right? December 2022 Summary for Madison, WIThe month will probably be remembered for its intense week-long cold snap, which brought the coldest December temperatures since 2013 to the area, though it actually finished about a degree warmer than average. It started off on a mild note, with a high of 49 F (9 C) on the 2nd, with a cloudy, at times damp, and mild first week and first half of the second. A system in the middle of the second week brought a good deal of precipitation - mostly rain on Wednesday the 14th, before it turned to snow and got colder from there. The third week was marked by its cold pattern, and several fronts coming through bringing significant changes in temperature along with them. The 20th had a morning high before the second round of cold came through later that night. Most of the day on the 21st was below 10 F (-12 C) - the high came late in the evening as we were in the warm sector between two fronts, and the temperature peaked at 28 F (-2 C) early on the 22nd before dropping to -1 F (-18 C) already by 3 PM that day. The 23rd was the first subzero December high since 1989, and the first subzero high at all since February 2021. Yikes! Thankfully, things moderated out through the Christmas holiday and final week of the month - with the warmest day of the month falling on the 29th, at 55/40 (13/4). The other thing that was a bit anomalous about the month was its snowfall: we surpassed the average snowfall for December on the 16th, and it ended up being the snowiest December since 2016. Nice! The Year![](https://i.ibb.co/Vv0F7hb/December-2022-box.png) Mean temp was 0.8 F warmer than the long-term average, with a nice warm May and November each helping those numbers considerably. Precipitation was over five inches wetter than the long-term average, and nearly 15 inches wetter than 2021 (!) - but almost exactly average if only considering 2000-present, as the climate does seem to have gotten considerably wetter over time. Overall, a year with some quite shitty parts, sure - but decent by local standards all things considered. Annual maximum and minimum were also both very close to long-term averages: maximum of 96 F (36 C) on June 14, and minimum of -18 F (-27 C) on January 26.

Thought I had posted this. The mean temperature for December was 2 F above average. Note that three days of data are missing around mid-month but I don't think it would have significantly impacted the averages for the month. Year as a whole finished 1 F above average and precipitation about 8 in/203 mm below. Of course the local weather station can easily miss localized heavy rain events but there was notable drought this summer. ![](https://i.imgur.com/U93fhUL.png)
