Radar looked shit hot for some storms in the Darwin region but as usual in October, they died in the arse out un the rural areas.... storms struggle a bit pushing in against the sea breeze in the early 'build up' months. The 'Labelle Cell' to our south west is cranking, but.... a good sign !

I've been fielding a few comments ( from friends and acquaintances ) re the ongoing heatwave across the Top End... As in, "wish they would stop calling it a heatwave, this is just normal, happens every year up here...." etc etc. Well, is it the norm and does it happen every October ? So the running mean of 34.5c this year is actually in the 95th % of all Octobers since 1941. And if the mean is maintained at this level, it will be only the 3rd time in 82 years it has been this hot in October. Mean max temps +34c at the Airport: 1973 - 34.4c 1998 - 34.2c 2002 - 34.2c 2003 - 34.1c 2005 - 34.2c 2008 - 34.4c 2009 - 34.8c 2013 - 34.1c 2014 - 34.3c 2018 - 34.2c 2019 - 34.3c 2021 - 34.5c 2023 - 34.5c ( so far ) And looking at 30 year Oct means: 1941-1970 - 32.9c 1961-1990 - 33.2c 1990 -2020 - 33.8c And since 2000: 2001-2023 - 34.0c So yeah, 'build ups' are getting hotter.....

Hottest place in AU ( so far today ) Ngukurr, NT. I worked on a bridge construction job over the Hodgeson River in 1993-94 ( near the Roper Bar Store ) One of the hardest, hottest places I've ever worked.... +40c everyday.... we had a BoM weather station at the Store. I used to check it every day after work, then come back to our dongas and tell the crew how hot it had been on that day.... Eventually the boss got the shits with me doing this, saying it was bad for the crew's morale... Funny how weather memories play tricks on you.... These are the actualls at Roper Rar Store in Oct- Dec 1993

From local guru, Pilko: "Good morning trendsetters. It’s not the best of mornings if you dislike heat and of course much of Northern Australia has lots of that at the moment. Southern parts of this great nation tho are freezing this morning, with snow about parts of Tasmania ( thanks Robbie and Courtney for the updates) as another late season cold pool effects the SE states. This cold change is forcing a blast of cooler air rocketing across the mainland and that burst is pushing thru southern and central parts of the NT. This is not good with the fire situation with increasing winds through these areas. This cool dry air pushes further north but forces hot dry air ahead of it and it’s this hot dry air that wafts over the Top End in coming days, causing drier but hotter conditions just in time for the weekend. Unfortunately the cool air will NOT reach the Top End. This means the chance of a shower or storm becomes even more remote with any activity contracting to the far west coast or Tiwi Islands. This dry burst looks only temporary thankfully with moisture returning by Monday, giving Darwin a 40 percent chance of a shower. Western and South Western parts of the Top End have done ok in the last week in comparison to the rest of the Territory and I am convinced that heavier falls would have fallen thru some of these areas, but remote country and limited recording stations doesn’t paint a real indication of the scattered nature of these storms. So the bad news continues with hot to very hot conditions across the north and little to no rainfall AFTER today. Today is our best chance of a shower or storm for 72-96 hours but even then it’s not a high probability. Conditions improving from Monday but we still look to be two weeks away from a shift in these horrible conditions. Stay cool and hydrated troops, that’s about the best advice I can give you.. have a top day 🍺🙂 Note the WX map shown has weeks one and two shown. Week two from November the 2nd shows some promise of a return to normality 🤔🙄."

From Pilko's FB Page: "Fires all across the NT at the moment with broad areas south of the Top End, the Barkly and Central Australia really struggling at the moment. All that good rain last year was always going cause issues like this 😢 Unfortunately only a big rain is going to ease this problem, but the next week to ten days at least looks pretty grim down there. There may be some moisture arriving from early to mid November hopefully which will be of major benefit to these affected areas. Fingers crossed 🤞

A post of mine on Pilko's FB Page: "Here's a thing I have pondered for some time and I'm wondering what the weather nerd members here at Pilko's think...... Do you take any notice of the BoM 'feels like' temps ? Now personally I reckon it's sorcery/witchcraft, having said that I do recognise that 'wind chill' is a factor in the need for a beanie or a hoodie. But really, the whole 'feels like' and 'apparent' temp thingy seems somewhat exaggerated to me.... take Darwin today... and in fact right now.... The 'apparent temp' at 7.00am this morning - 33.6c The 'apparent temp' at 1.30pm this arvo - 33.5c So here are the actuals: 7.00am - Max-27.3c, DP-24.7c, RH-86%. 1.30pm - Max 35.4c, DP-14.1c, RH-28% So honestly, did it really 'feel like' 33.6c at 7.00am this morning ? ( the actual temp was a balmy 27.3c ) And at 1.30pm this arvo, did it 'feel like' 33.5c out there toiling away in the back yard ? ( the actual temp was 35.4c )" media.bom.gov.au/social/blog/1153/apparent-feels-like-temperature/#:~:text=Calculating%20the%20'feels%20like'%20temperature,walking%20outdoors%20in%20the%20shade.
