Unrelenting heatwave gripping northern Australia ( source: Weatherzone ) A severe to extreme heatwave will continue to bake northern Australia this weekend and into next week, with temperatures possibly approaching the high-40s around Wednesday or Thursday. The upper-level weather pattern over Australia is currently in a zonal state, meaning the upper-level winds are generally flowing in a west-east direction. This zonal flow is allowing a slow-moving upper-level high pressure system to remain centered over Australia, which is causing a very hot air mass to linger across northern parts of the country. Over the past week, this hot air mass caused temperatures to exceeded 45°C at six separate weather stations in WA, Qld and northwest NSW, getting as high as 45.9°C at Roebourne in WA’s Pilbara region. Unfortunately, the heat isn’t going anywhere soon and a severe to extreme heatwave – the two highest categories on the Australian heatwave scale – are set to linger in parts of WA, the NT and Qld through this weekend and into next week. The maps below show the heatwave severity forecasts for the next six days, broken down into two three-day periods. ^^Image: Heatwave severity forecast for the three days starting on Friday, November 8, 2024. ^^Image: Heatwave severity forecast for the three days starting on Monday, November 11, 2024. Some computer models suggest that maximum temperatures in far western Qld could hover around 41 to 44°C during the next seven days. There are also indications that temperatures could once again exceed 45°C in northern WA around Wednesday or Thursday next week. ^^Image: Forecast maximum temperature on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, according to the ECMWF-HRES model. While northern Australia is usually hot at this time of year, the heatwave currently gripping the region is abnormally hot for November. In the Pilbara, Onslow Airport’s running average maximum temperature for the first week of November was 39.4°C, which is 5°C above the long-term average.

Listening to a BoM forecaster on the radio yesterday... she talked about the heatwave warnings in the Top End and Darwin and she indicated that the BoM have changed the parameters they use to issue warnings this year, and we can expect to see more such warnings in media releases... Mmmmm well, I'm all for warnings to perhaps protect the vulnerable, ie the elderly, the very young, those with pre existing medical issues etc... But on the other hand, warnings when the forecast temps and the ones that actually happen are barely above the monthly means... well locals just think it is scaremongering and it feeds the whole conspiracy/manipulation thingy the cooker crackpots are so fond of spruiking. So here are some figures re Darwin Airport the first 9 days of the month... under a 'heatwave warning' every day this month: "I daresay most don't believe it, but in reality the Top End heatwave conditions haven't really impacted the Darwin urban areas... the first 9 days of Nov show anomalies of -0.1c for mins and +0.8c for max temps using all years of data. ( 1941-2024 ) So yeah, days a bit above the norm but not excessively so re the 1991-2020 means. The Nov means using the 1991-2020 figures = 25.4c/33.8c." In fact even inland at Batchelor it hasn't been really 'hotter' than average so far in November... But to be fair the forecast max temps the next week in Batchelor are up around 38c-39c... And another stat re the heatwave warnings that includes suburban Darwin. Mean max temps the first 9 days of the month at the Airport since 2020 AND the number of +35c days: 2024 - 34.2c ( 1 day ) 2023 - 34.5c ( 4 days ) 2022 - 35.1c ( 6 days ) 2021 - 34.2c ( 3 days ) 2020 - 35.6c ( 6 days ) Nothing outta the ordinary really in Darwin in Nov 2024.... and just goes to show how quickly everyone forgets previous horrendous starts to November in recent years. If the heatwave warnings get 'overdone', people take little if any notice of 'em...

The last 12 months in Darwin... every month except January (-0.2c ) above the long term means re max temps ( 1941-2024 means ) Using 1991-2020 means: Only January below the latest 30 year means ( -0.4c ) And May and September set new monthly mean max temp records. Today's max of 35.7c is the 41st day of the year to exceed 35c ( record 45 days in 2019 )

A late max temp at the Airport today... 35.2c at 4.40pm .... was 34.6 just after 11.00am too... And how is it that Pirlangimpi over on the Tiwis is consistantly hotter than Darwin during the build up ?? And the radar...? a bit too far south for the 'burbs I'd say... And a Berry Springs Beast inbound... first storms in over a week in the Darwin region

Hot one today at the Airport 36.3c... and the 43rd +35c day of 2024. I can hear thunder in the distance, but I don't think the Desierto de Leanyer is gunna score anything...
