Dry cold and sunny winter climates are underrated. Many people don't seem to realise that it's the rain, dampness and mud that make our winters miserable, not the cold itself.

Dry cold and sunny winter climates are underrated. Many people don't seem to realise that it's the rain, dampness and mud that make our winters miserable, not the cold itself. Iโve seen many Korean expat blogs who lives in the typical oceanic western Europe comment toward tourists to give a tip that be aware of the โbone chillingโ cold despite not many days are actually falling well below the zero. I think one reason they think to sensitive about winters in the western Europe is because theyโre tamed to spend winter time with a developed heating system in every apartment and household to keep it overwarm all the time.

Overrated? Humid subtropical. Perpetual humidity all summer long, likely huge falls of cold rain, no prospect of any snow, rather just be showered with Seattle-like dampness or be shoved into an oven. Shanghai really is the nasty archetype of a humid subtropical climate for me. Underrated? Warm maritime; aka maritime subtropical under Trewartha. They can be very interesting in their own ways, with switches in humidity, sun/cloud patterns, are ideal for outdoors living and all in all, don't require AC! Cold rain is not as big of an issue in Whangarei as in Shanghai either

Overrated:
Oceanic climates.
Humid continental climates, especially the Dfb type.
The boring cool Mediterranean and tropical highland climates.
In general, any climate which people hype about that summers are mild/not too hot.
Underrated:
Desert & semi arid climates.
Continental Mediterranean climates are highly underrated, ones with summer temperatures above 90ยฐF are awesome

Underrated: Oceanic/Mediterranean transitional climates with pleasantly warm, but comfortable, summers like the Willamette Valley, Pamplona, or SW France Milder 4-seasonal climates like places in the Appalachian Mountains, or like New Haven, CT and some places in Eastern France and the Balkans, as opposed to the stereortypical 'Canadian' ones Some of the Pontic/Black Sea climates also seem fascinating.
Overrated: Hot summer mediterranean climates like Malta that are very dry, but also quite humid and uncomfortable during the summer Places like Phoenix that are an oven for much of the year and are compared to places like the Bay Area in terms of their desirability Climates like Krasnoyarsk that have frigid, long, winters that make up nearly 1/2 of the year, when substantially milder winters would still effectively retain snowcover Extreme plains climates like Nebraska with boring dry winters prone to extreme cold snaps and scorching summers

I do think the clouds play a role. In Seoul in the winter it's rare to have long periods of cloudy weather. Going somewhere cloudy probably does take a toll on your mental health if you're used to ensoleillement in the wintertime

Any climate that's perpetually mild or warm/hot is very overrated. Generally jerked off to by the public who live in cold climates and have a "the grass is greener on the other side" mentality. The amount of people who move from up north to FL because of it's "warm and sunny" and end up whining the entire time they're down there or moving back up north is fucking hilarious to me.
As far as underrated, I think solid four season climates are underrated. People moan and bitch about how extreme they are, but most of the year is generally nice in terms of temps, and extreme cold and extreme heat are both not the norm in these climates. I can understand people complaining about Winnipeg being extreme, but climates like Des Moines or Omaha get whined about just the same.
Btw - no offense to anyone on here - but I do think people are getting their personal feelings mixed up with actuality. Continental climates, Upstate NY, the High Plains etc are def not "overrated" climates, those climates are generally bitched about by the public. And even on this forum, they're only praised by a certain few people.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought the premise of this thread were about climates that are generally praised and are actually kinda sucky (overrated) and climates that are universally hated but aren't actually that bad (underrated). Continental climates certainly aren't praised generally.

As for overrated climates, steambath tropics that everyone secretly hates but keeps traveling to because of social status. Subtropical is also close, it gets stifling summers and shitty winters but everybody loves it for some reason.
Underrated, sunny and dry subarctic climates. A crisp and clear -15ยฐC winter with fluffy snow is worlds better for mental health than six months of 5ยฐC drizzle.

^ Yeah, but the heat and humidity in South FL is for much longer and much more relentless than anywhere north of GA. Northern US summer typically have averages of like 28/17 in their hottest month, that's a far cry from 33/25 and high humidity. Also, they get more breaks from the heat, a break from the heat in June-September in South FL is nearly impossible. Also, October feels very little different from July, while even somewhere like Atlanta is noticeably cooler in October than July. There's really no comparison....
What I gather from some people is they assume South FL get the winter/spring weather year round.

Even many of the people who don't favor continental climates have posted continental dream climates (like nei, gior, arcleo, and baba) since they are considered the 'weather enthusiast' or normative choice.
