The first spring blooms arrived early to Atlanta this year. Forsythia blooming here on January 12 in the dead of winter
Late January scene, daffodils and forsythia in full bloom with lush green grass
Some shrubs leafed out during the first week of February
Leafed out pink Japanese magnolias from February 5
More beautiful magnolias in the springlike 73F weather yesterday

Long’s Peak this afternoon: Doesn’t look too impressive in this image but it’s over 9000’ higher than here. Also the highest peak in North America north of the other Colorado 14ers and east of the Sierras/Cascades/coast ranges.

A walk at Savannas Preserve State Park after work today. Recent warm weather and lack of rain have finally made the trails just about passable. The water is still surprisingly high, though. It was the warmest day since October 17th here, with a high of 89 F (32 C) at my PWS and around 86 F-87 F (31 C) in this area. Mesic flatwoods after a recent prescribed burn, with saw palmetto regrowth Small marsh with waterlilies The marsh grass is still dormant. Even though it's been plenty warm enough, these basin marsh species won't green up until true spring arrives.

I'm in Sundsvall for the day, a coastal city 180km further south than Umeå, wedged between two 150-250m tall mountains. On the south facing slope of the northern mountain/hill I found some exotic trees. There was a bunch of oak, which I kind of expected considering there are some examples of naturally spread oak even in Umeå. What I didn't expect to find however was a bunch of naturally spread beech trees. Beech trees are in Sweden very much considered to be isolated to the far south of the country, with no natural beech forest north of lake Mälaren at 59°N. Now these beech saplings are hardly a forest, but the fact that the beech trees planted in Sundsvall not only survive but also proliferate is pretty remarkable. View of the city from the top of the northern mountain: Sea to the west. Also notable is that juniper is considered a bush in northern Sweden, that is only supposed to grow upwards as a tree in a pillar formation in southern Sweden. But here they do seem to manage that too. Edit: I'm finding beech saplings in flat terrain too and not only south facing slopes.

After I posted those last pics the weather cleared up and I had a few hours until my train back home so I went for another round. The harbor The topography of the town means there are a lot of apartments with great views. Like these ones with panoramic views of the entire town. I decided to go up the mountain again. This lommaren ass dude decided, for some reason, to ignore the stairs and instead CRAWLED on all fours in the snow a dozen meters next to the stairs. (You can see how his forearms and legs are covered in snow). The weather got really nice actually. It was only just below freezing, sunny, and not the slightest wind, with fresh snow all around. New-old sunny view of the town. Back home in Umeå again and there's a lot more snow. The official figure is 75 cm which is among the highest in the last couple of decades. January precipitation was close to the record, and February hasn't been very dry either. Official figure for Sundsvall was like 50cm, but seemed more like 20-30 to me as I could walk through snowy untrodded areas without getting snow in my boots.

^ Nice pics. No that does not look like 75cm snow depth. Well not everywhere is gonna be 75 cm, but it doesn't sound implausible for a flat wide open field. There really is a lot of snow this year.

Went for a hike in the foothills last weekend, just a few miles away from here. Looking down at Horsetooth reservoir: > Typical lower foothill scenery, the mountain in the far left looks like dog ears from Fort Collins. Pine Ridge: >
