Well, the first month of 2023 is done and dusted. For Territorians, January is usually an exciting month meterologically, being 'peak' wet season with active monsoon bursts of rain and cooler max temps due to increased cloud cover. Darwin often records 25 overcast/cloudy days out of 31 in January so any time that big yellow bastard in the sky is not burning the bare skin is a bonus ! Its fair to say that the Territory has had a pretty good 'wet season' so far, with well above average rainfall in the Sept to early January period. The Monsoon retreated north in early Jan and we entered a 'monsoonal break' period of isolated showers and storms, and conditions similar to the dreaded 'build up' ie increased heat and dp's. So with the retreat of the Monsoon, it seems that the monthly rainfall figures are slightly down on the long term averages within the Darwin region, although over east at Gove and down south at Alice Springs they have had above average rainfall. In fact its been particularly wet in Alice Springs this month, with 70% of the yearly mean falling in January. La Nina still hasn't loosened its grip on Australia, and Alice Springs figures show significantly wetter and cooler than average data for January 2023. Rainfall - 293.6mm falling on 20 days ( long term mean 431.3mm ) Highest daily fall - 62.6mm on the 1st. Max temps - 31.8c av ( long term mean 31.8c ) Highest max - 34.9c on the 23rd. Lowest max - 29.4c on the 19th and 29th. Min temps - 25.7c av ( long term mean 24.9c ) Highest min - 28.2c on the 18th. Lowest min - 23.9c on the 24th. Rainfall - 375.2mm falling on 24 days ( long term mean 280.8mm ) Highest daily fall - 59.8mm on the 23rd. Max temps - 31.3c av ( long term mean 32.1c ) Highest max - 33.7c on the 17th. Lowest max - 29.1c on the 23rd. Min temps - 25.0c av ( long term mean 24.8c (highest min - 26.7c on the 13th. Lowest min - 23.2c on the 2nd. Rainfall - 173.6mm falling on 10 days ( long term mean 41.3mm ) Highest daily fall - 83.6mm on the 9th. Max temps - 33.9c av ( long term mean 36.5c ) Highest max - 40.1c on the 26th. The Summary Of January At Sheffield 2023
January was mercifully a milder than average winter month, with the mean temperature 1.3°C above average. The first half was very wet, with rain every day, and also very mild, with many days above 10°C. There was a very short cold spell 16th-22nd, in which most of the frosts and the only one day of snow occurred. It was the least snowiest January in my records. The weather was dry from mid-month until month-end, due to an anti-cyclone which built over the country especially in the latter part of the month. It seemed like a much sunnier than average month.

January was shitty and probably the worst month I’ve seen in Fort Collins. The first half was ok and the last few days had an interesting cold snap. In between however was the worst stretch of weather I’ve ever seen here, with 11 straight days of 35-42 f highs. Average high: 38.6 (-6.4 f) —coldest since 2007Average low: 18.0 (-0.3 f) Mean: 28.3 (-3.3 f) —coldest since 2007Precipitation: 0.79” (+0.38”, 193%) Precip days: 9 Snowfall: 8.8” (+2.1”, 131%) Snow days: 9 Max snow depth: 5” on the 18th Days snow lying: 18 Highest temp: 59 on the 10th Lowest temp: -7 on the 31st Highest low: 33 on the 11th Lowest high: 7 on the 30th —coldest since 1997Here’s the month (AgMesonet midnight-midnight): And the official coop data (7 PM-7 PM):

Despite ending on a fairly cold note in the last few days, January ended up several degrees above average. The most unusual part of the month was the two weeks of fog and stable, well above average temperatures that we had. We also went above freezing on January 22nd, which was our first above-freezing high since November 27th. We also failed to hit -30C in the entire month, which is highly uncommon. Sunshine hours should be out later this week and they will likely be way below average, as the aforementioned foggy period was near-constant and sunless and made it a very gloomy month. Average high: -8.3C (normal: -10.1C) Average low: -16.8C (normal: -20.7C) Mean temperature: -12.5C (normal: -15.5C) Warmest high: 3.7C (Jan 26th) Warmest low: -6.2C (Jan 25th) Coldest high: -19.2C (Jan 30th) Coldest low: -29.6C (Jan 30th) Precipitation: 5.0mm (normal: 14.8mm) Precipitation days: 7 (normal: 10.3)

January was much milder than normal, which was great due to the high energy prices. Noteworthy was the period between 11 and 16 January, during which the temperature never went below freezing. In January at 60N. Precipitation was average. As of 1 February, there is still no permanent snowpack.
Highest high: 6.3C (1st) Highest low: 3.2C (12th) Lowest high: -7.1C (6th) Lowest low: -11.1C (6th)
Anomalies from 91-20:
High: +1.9C Mean: +2.6C Low: +3.2C Precipitation: +4.4mm (108%)

January 2023 Summary - Atlanta
This was easily my favorite month so far here in Atlanta, and of course the best winter month I have ever experienced. It was mild, ranking as the 6th warmest January of all time here, and it was wetter than average with some very nice rain events, including 2 days with high-quality thunderstorms (including one day with a frontal squall line that produced severe thunderstorms), and some of the cold nights were of the good radiational variety. It was pretty stable by Atlanta standards, only dipping to 29F at the lowest, and only recording 5 freezes. Due to the mildness, some plants have already started to bloom. It was slightly warmer than my ideal January, in fact.

Average January conditions (1991-2020)
Average high: 26.0°C | Daily mean: 20.3°C | Average low: 14.6°C
Average precipitation: 43.1mm | Average precipitation days (>0.2mm): 7.9 | Average relative humidity: 50%
Overall a slightly warmer and drier than average January. Most of the rainfall this month came from sporadic convective showers, so rainfall totals would've varied a great deal across a small area. I would estimate that my location got around 30-35mm, much closer to average than the 10.2mm recorded at the BOM weather station.
