May 2018 - Which of these northern cities will have:A) The warmest May by mean temp?B) The warmest abs max temp/record high in May? C) The coldest abs low/record low in May? D) The wettest May by preicipitation amount? The contenders are: 1. Anchorage, Alaska, US.2. St. Johns, Newfoundland, Canada.3. Kirkwall, Orkney, UK. 4. Trondheim, Norway.5. Petrozavodsk, Russia.A contender for the warmest mean and abs max? 6. Yakutsk, Russia. The famous city on this forum...a contender for the record high maybe? Surely a strong contender for record low? All official met.office stations in the cities are allowed, and airports for those cities also, even if outside the city proper. Didn't bother to put link to all cities, you know where to find them on wikipedia and elsewhere. And I don't know how to put up a multiple choice poll....moderator might do it if at all possible. So, pick your choice before May 10th! And the record low as soon as possible! Second choice is allowed before May 20th! But most points for the first choice! (twice)

Fixed permanent links to all of those A) Trondheim B) Yakutsk C) Yakutsk D) St. John's Purely based on the law of averages and also on the fact that Petrozavodsk has been mired in the European Russian cold wave for months now.

Interesting that Petroskoi has reached 30C in May only once. And that recording wasn't 30.0C or 30.1C, but 33.0C!

Yakutsk seems to have reached at least 23.2c today. Anchorage (Ted Stevens AP) seems to have seen very even and cool temps so far in May, from 2.2c to 10c.
St. John's seems to have varied from -2.5c to 15.3c so far.
Petrozavodsk seems to have been cool so far, from -0.6c to ca 8 c.

Looking at the data after 20 days, using Infoclimat as source. It is a poor source for lows and highs, I know. Any better source?
St.John's is possibly the coldest, with mean ca 6C and lots of freezing lows. Did I count 9 freezing lows? That cold sea nearby surely doesn't help. ca 47 mm precip so far.
Anchorage /Ted Stevens seems to have had an uneventful May so far, temps only varied from 0C to 15C, and pretty dry, 12 mm precip. No freezing lows! Mean ca 8C.
Kirkwall has varied from 1C to 20.4C and has mean ca 10C.
Petrozavodsk by that large Onega Lake: Most highs are missing at infoclimat. Has had 7 lows at 2C or colder. Any know data for mean there?
Yakutsk - another Russian station lacking highs. Seems to have had as many freezing lows as St. John's, so can't be very warm mean.
Trondheim - Værnes: Mean at 12.7C so far, temps varied from 1C - 26.5C. 21 mm precip.

Thanks, if I understood that correctly (my Russian is very poor) the mean so far at Petroskoi (Petrozavodsk) is 11.3C, which is +3.6C compared to normal, and precip so far is 14 mm. Second warmest so far in May it seems.

1) Warmest May mean among these cities: Mean: 13.3°C Trondheim Runner up:
12.5°C (+3.8°C) Petrozavodsk - very warm May there also, same deviation as Trondheim
2) Warmest abs max temp: Either 27.8°C in Trondheim or maybe Yakutsk, which at least recorded 27.6°C. Petrozavodsk 26.6°C
3) Coldest low: Probably Yakutsk, with at least -4.6°C.
St.John's -2.5°C
Anchorage avoided freeze in May, but didn't get warmer high than 17.8°C
4) Wettest:
St. John's: 185 mm
Crunch41 got it all right when he used the current leaders, but his first take was way off.
Many had 3 correct.
Unless Yakutsk actually had a warmer abs max, because I could not find all data. If Yakutsk had record high warmer than Trondheim, well then I had all 4 correct ; )
