What is the overall goal of this forum?

Well potentially if we cease to be private at some point in the future it could end up along with City-Data when typing "weather forum" into a search engine. By then we may well want to allow randoms on here, but it has to be on our terms when that's going to happen.

To be honest, I think our current potential is maybe 40 members. Personally I'd love for us to add a few next week. If we keep dunno and say Ipswich man out though we're getting a bit towards the tailspin moment. I got an OK from ben to invite Ipswich last week though. We can't be so choosy when it comes to Anglos unless they're outright loons (Y-man, Meteoman).

Ben had to pay 10 dollars for it. Some serious crowdfunding to be made Probably cheaper than Beerman's weekly beer haul in the cheap Outback lol... Having said that, we're not going to chase external users for the next 12 months anyway so we can let it stand for now.

It's private at the moment because people are saying stuff about certain C-D members/mods that we wouldn't necessarily want them to read in case we get banned - I imagine we will have got all this out of our systems at some point and this place will develop more of an identity of its own.

Ideally I'd like 40 C-D members joining this place with 30 regular contributors, anything less and it might get a bit boring with not enough people to make some of the niche threads viable. I think a lot of the people who've been given the OK to join will join if the right person asks them and sells the place to them properly.

Ultimately though there is a limit to how many people we can leach off City-Data, so after a couple of months I might put it to a vote whether we want it to be open to the public - remember though that we have just voted not to allow a load of people to join because we think they would spoil the tone of the place, there would be no real way of pre-vetting people so the benefits of be able to have as little moderation as possible and work like a democracy because we all know each other would have to be weighed against the cons of letting in unknowns/trolls.

I made a bit of a mistake getting the URL that we've got, though it's not like it really matters right now since we're a closed forum anyway. If we get the domain worldweatherforum.com or something like that it could attract a lot of people I'm sure, but the Chat section has twice as many posts as the Weather forum, so are we really a weather forum at all? As for the server we're currently with, we get 200 MB for free and we've already used 9 MB of that, so we're good for another couple of months at least. We can pay for more, but it's not cheap: $14.40/month for 2000 MB, $73.50/month for 10000 MB etc - something to bear in mind when posting photos

I think the best option for now would be to work on getting as many of the right kind of C-D people to jump ship as we can, carry on populating the forum with varied, high-quality content, get all the C-D related talk out of our systems, and see where we want to go from there before we hit the magic 200 MB. I set this place up essentially as a private club for C-D people with as few rules as possible because I wanted a place like this to exist and because I thought a more relaxed atmosphere would bring out different sides of people, but if it starts to go stale once we've hit peak membership I'm open to any kind of suggestions.
