What the title says, just to talk about aussie rules and if anyone new to the sport wants to know more about it.
First thing: tips for this weekend, preliminary final 1: adelaide vs geelong, preliminary final 2: richmond vs gws
I'm tipping adelaide and richmond for wins.

Highlights from the first week of the finals/playoffs. 3 fairly open games and one game that is the closest in finals history.

For the sake of Australia, Adelaide and Richmond need to win. Geelong and GWS can fuck off, nobody likes them anymore lol

Yeah it'd be nice for Richmond to win this year, they kind of deserve it as they haven't won since something like 1980. Plus they've been the meme and go-to joke for most of the afl community for the better part of 20 years. Especially Dustin Martin (to non-afl people, dustin martin can push anyone away from him with one arm, extremely tough and powerful player) who should get the Brownlow Medal (best player of the year).

Are Geelong some sort of mega-club in spite of the city's small size or what?

Although it would seem like that, Geelong has a medium sized fanbase as the town it is based isnt huge as you said earlier. The main appeal and reason why you see a lot of them is that theyve barely had a bad season in 10+ years. They've won the 07, 09 and 11 grand finals and although have dropped a bit in recent times to 4-5th spot they're still a force to be reckoned with to stay as a competitive side for such a long period of time. So they have a medium sized yet very passionate membership group.

The preliminary finals are over and the 2 teams for the 2017 AFL Grand Final have been decided. Adelaide and Richmond, Adelaide have not been in a grand final since 1998 and Richmond since 1982, both have had long droughts but only one will succeed next weekend.
The richmond vs gws game
The adelaide vs geelong game

Nice, I'm tipping Adelaide by 17. Hoping for a close contest and although I really want Richmond to win, I'm sure Adelaide have a better team overall.

Think I'll go for Geelong, always loved that name. Richmond can get fucked and lose every game because there are far too many places called that, booooring I looked up the Wiki page on AFL to see where some of these places are, turns out half those teams are based in Melbourne and apart from Geelong they all share the same two stadiums, wtf don't they at least want a place of their own?
