Very cold today. Got down to a whopping -5.9'C at the airport with the warmest hourly reading being -4.7'C, making today our first winter's day of the season. Lawn was very odd an hour ago. With the temp at about 1'C, the grass had odd white patches of frost. It wasn't even that leaves in the grass where frosty and the grass not. Some spots of grass were just frosty for some reason. Down in the local frost valley there was a large patch of frost for some unknown reason. Pond seen in the background on the previous image even managed to produce some ice! Probably the most frost prone area in the entire city though, but still. From just one day as well. Topographic map of the valley and lake. Valley as seen from Bräntberget (north-west corner of the map. It's the most pathetic ski slope ever). Not a lot keeping Umeå from looking like December now. Some wild trees here and there still have some leaves, like these two aspen, but it's pretty dead now in general apart from the odd neighborhood that has a particularly late-foliage monoculture. Our flowerbeds haven't got the memo yet though.

NYC photos from last week. Saw an ad for food knot would like from the train window not sure what this is about before it was a latte-sipping bougie neighborhood, Carroll Gardens was mostly Italian-American. Still some left. dreary day; after sunset back garden on a sunny, cold day nice looking church morning light cute street under a very elevated NYC train line; dunno so high going to bike up the Hudson. In Carroll Gardens. Low angle light at 9 am feels very not summer. Or not September. crossing the East River going across Lower Manhattan to the Hudson looking south along the Hudson shiny new development in Midtown along the Hudson, Hudson Yards. Wasn't there only a few years ago looking north along the Hudson up the hill into Washington Heights to get on the bridge view from the George Washington Bridge from the New Jersey side found a small waterfall. later caught a glimpse of a bald eagle form a river viewpoint at the NY-NJ state border. Mid-October pictures:
Nyköping's harbour doing its best rendition of Bay Area summers:
Nice road towards the Brannäs cliffs on Oxelösund's northern part of the peninsula:
Tree house:
Great cliffs:
3 km by air, 31 km by road to the land in the distance:
Jim
Easy to look through the forest here:
Still humid in spite of the weather, localized dew over the small ponds in the nature reserve:
Some twilight surfing again, this time turning right just north of Svärta where the river valley of the Svärta stream ends rather visibly here:
Very autumn-style field here:
The high humidity remained:
Leaves everywhere:
Classic Eastern Sweden autumn scene:
Very special light over a very special road:
Went to check the distance to this island on Oxelösund's Femöre Peninsula. Entirely reasonable for a swim next summer, but I'm having doubts over the viability and safety of the seafloor. Lots of small rocks.
Nice gravel leaf road:
Stunning twilight on the Oxelösund canoeing club's location:

It's been snowing off and on about 50/50 since Wednesday. It hasn't really stuck until last night though. This was my balcony view upon waking up this morning. There are still some stubborn trees with leaves left. I don't really know what determines which roads the snow melts on and which it sticks on. This is actually an image of Y intersection. The asphalt bike/pedestrian path splits in two a few meters up, but for some reason the left asphalt path is completely covered in snow and the right, main path isn't. I highly doubt they use salt or underground heating on the bike path. These reeds look absolutely disgusting. LOL. This guy! Apparently 3-5cm is enough for him. Pond has less ice cover compared to a few days ago actually. Ugh. Not ideal weather for frisbee golf. I think I heard them say they had dropped three discs into the creek. Who wants to go alpine skiing? Went to my favorite forest path again. Very few leaves remaining. Weird to see so many leaves on top of snow. Quite a few oak saplings along this path. Much easier to spot in late October when the oaks are the only vegetation still retaining leaves. This image has five different oak saplings. Doggo. It started snowing pretty heavily for a few minutes while I was in the forest. Biking down this path with my bike and dog wasn't the best of ideas. At this point I had to admit defeat and step off the bike and lead it.

Nice pictures Babu , is there a chance this cover might stick around? Looks like it'll be very mild down here next week (SMHI claims a 7°C mean likely Tuesday-Monday), but admittedly this does not always correlate with northern conditions. There has been a -3°C low this week and some other light frosts which would suggest it's being felt here too, but as usual, no October snow to show for it.

That's it.

Here there are couple of pictures from this week: On Tuesday and Wends day we had a couple of very impressive sunsets. In both cases I was on the train during the best part and I only managed to take pictures of the last part. Anyway, the local news site published quite a lot of cool pictures about it. The other day I also tried to take a couple of pictures of the full moon rising, but my cellphone camera is just not suited for this kind of light :/ Finally, this is the very autumn-like weather we are having today, with low clouds and rain:

Went for a walk along the lake. Nice colors. Parts of the lake had a thin sheet of ice. We had the dog unleashed at first, but even though he hates all bodies of water, and usually doesn't even want to go onto a frozen lake in February, he just ran out onto the extremely thin ice. He was standing like 2 meters out, ice cracking, over like 50cm deep water. If he'd gone further, or if the ice had broken, I would've had to jump into the water and get him. Stupid dog. We put on his leash after that. More lake stuff Jajaja we maded white beach on the distance! Roe deer tracks. Hahaha fucking hell! This guy! What a madlad. We also crossed him again 30 minutes later as we headed back, still walking around in just a t-shirt. A truck tipped over spilling 400 liters of diesel. Luckily however, the cargo was woodchips, which absorbed all the diesel. This look is weird.

Best of last weekend and early this week:
Fine autumn ride (36 km) around the 2.5 k village of Stigtomta last Friday. The pictures were taken in a rural area prior to getting past there though.
Saturday last week was quite epic, it was mountain climbing time
Had to crawl a bit up this one.
Done with that part!
Best not slip... Sadly the depths of those edges of the cliff can't really be seen because of all the trees, but it was probably 20-25 metres judging by Google Earth (yes, where the branch was otherwise you'd seen a solid steep).
Job done!
Nice forest too:
Contrast between evergreens and leaves:
Went to the rural part 15 km right north of town last Sunday for a nice ride on a newly-paved excellent road:
The forest here is quite stunning:
This felt like riding on a bike lane, so smooth:
Quite a lot of trees on Wednesday afternoon:
The lake I came to see was a bit underwhelming though:
This meadow made up for it however:

A few images from this weekend in Trondheim. First hard overnight freeze came Oct 27th.
The owners can have their boats on the sea all year at this marina. That would be difficult in Oslo actually. Snow on the mts across the fjord.
Up in the hills SE (Estenstad, 300 m ASL) of the city Oct 28th

Update from today. Kinda weird with most of the leaves left on trees coupled with wintry (for Paris) weather. The owners can have their boats on the sea all year at this marina. That would be difficult in Oslo actually. Snow on the mts across the fjord.
How often does the fjord freeze over, if at all?

How often does the fjord freeze over, if at all? The Trondheim fjord never freeze over. Same with all major fjords along the west coast even up in the Arctic Circle.
The Oslo fjord can freeze over in cold winters, but that has become very rare. Don't remember last time it happen. It must have been frozen in Jan 1987. Many of the major marinas in Oslo are in small inlets of the fjord which freeze over more often.

Last night's -14'C managed to freeze this creek! And this is absolutely nuts! Yesterday, a bit of the shore had some ice on this lake, and today the entire 3000x500m lake was frozen! I have never in my life seen that before! Crazy! And what's even crazier is that all the ice will melt in a few days. I don't know if I've ever seen an entire lane freeze and thaw before. Normally when the entire lake is frozen, it's gonna stay frozen until April or sometimes March. You could walk out a bit on the ice, but it would crack and make spooky sounds. Pretty cool when the ice cracks but because the ice plates are pressed against eachother, they hold. Here the water started pushing through. This crack actually sounded so scary. It wasn't the normal cracking sound. When the ice cracked, there was a large bang from the bridge 5m away. Very spooky. (The crack in the image leads all the way to the bridge 15m away) If you ever stumble upon a newly frozen lake, skip stones for god's sake. It creates some very cool and alien sounds. Sadly this lake is next to the motorway so it doesn't sound as amazing as it should. Some of the stones could still be heard pew-pewing after a whole minute. I wonder if any of them reached the other side.

A day at the beach a few days ago, pretty chilly on the coast with a 25-30km/h SW seabreeze but much warmer near my house; was around 19-21C at the beach and 25-26C inland. A view looking up the liquidambar in front of my house, nearly fully leaved
