My mistake, it was the beginning of the Viking age that was colder? I've read that the climate in Scandinavia becoming colder triggered the initial raids and migrations. It's said that part of the reason why the Norwegians were defeated at Stamford Bridge in 1066, was because they were struggling to deal to cope with a heatwave, it was October. Which suggests that it was a pretty warm period, I guess Difficult to say where I draw the line if I include some of the other cities suggested, the Vikings established presences there, but they didn't found them. I could just as easily throw in London, which people don't really associate with the Vikings. I think the most simple and common explanation is the most plausible one: money. It was all about greed and adventure.
That seems to be the case, which is why they always went where the money was, be it raiding Paris or working as mercenaries fighting for the Byzantines. It's obvious what they saw in England. The raids started off small, but when the word got out that it was wealthy, but poorly defended, the raids became larger and more frequent, until eventually the Danish King invaded and took over.

Be this a climate battle, or a bloody history lesson?

Be this a climate battle, or a bloody history lesson? Both. A climate battle by inland standards; a history lesson by maritime standards.

The Danes grew grapes and made their own wine during Viking Age. New knowledge due to archeological finds.

From every place mentioned here: 1) Pskov 2) Kiev 3) Staraya Ladoga (based on St. Petersburg) 4) Veliky Novgorod
For the poll, Stockholm wins. Decent summers and winters. 5) Stockholm 6) Oslo 7) Lund (too mild in winter) 8) Copenhagen 9) Trondheim 10) York 11) Dublin 12) Vinland 13) Tromso 14) Reykjavik 15) Nuuk

These climates all suck.
Very hard to choose, York is probably the best out of a poor bunch, the others have polar winters and freezing shoulder seasons with no summers, so York wins for being milder

All of these are poor, but I think Lund is slightly better than york, apr and aug are the same and may-july are warmer, it also has 250hrs extra sunshine, and both winters have acceptable-to-good temps for me. York's milder autumn definitely is better though.

I like how Vinland is so much colder than the others.
Even back then, I'm sure it was significantly colder than the European settlements. Must've been quite a shock for them.

Maybe not that shocked, as the Norse also lived and farmed inland lowland areas, and some of those going in viking (viking was an activity you could choose) sure had the knowledge to manage. Check out climate around lake Mjøsa as in Lillehammer. And even colder places further into the valleys.

Lund is the least of the evils with Copenhagen as a close second.

Oslo for being on the continental side of things and likely maintaining better snowpack than a lot of the others.

Tromsø, Norway
Snowy, and only moderately cold winters; reliably wet, with a beautiful Mediterranean precip pattern.
Also by far the most frontally active of the lot.

They all suck.
Least bad is probably Stockholm.

St. Anthony (Vinland) gets an A- thanks to those snow totals. The others get B's and C's.

I went with Stockholm for having the warmest summers and being the sunniest of the bunch. It's still a shitty climate though.
