A magnitude 5.9 quake just occured NE of Shibetsu, Hokkaido at a depth of 8km which is quite shallow. Nothing major but just felt like starting a quake thread.

I am loving the recent seismic activity in California. Well, that's one thing those idiots can't blame on CO 2, hah!

That's not to say an increase in atmospheric beyond anything cow farts and baked beans could generate couldn't affect tectonic plates. Some thinking about this has been done. The atmosphere would only have to be warmer by 100f for a few million years and a corresponding uptick in volcanism would decrease tectonic activity ( yes decrease) by altering mantle flows and 'locking' the plates . Crazy shit m.phys.org/news/2008-05-hot-climate-plate-tectonics.htmlInteresting! I wouldn't have expected that outcome. We should do a poll - I wonder how many on here have experienced an earthquake. I technically have, but I slept through it. An earthquake with an epicenter in northern Oklahoma reached Kansas City just after 7AM on September 3, 2016. I apparently woke up just a few minutes after it happened.

It looks like, by returning back to Italy for a while, I missed a quite remarkable earthquake in France (for French standards, I mean). Most of sources I can find are in French, in summary the most reported magnitude is 5.4 (which sounds quite strong for France, isn't it?), there were several damaged building in particular in some villages/small towns close to Montélimar, and there were 4 injured people (of which 1 quite severe case).

Any significant quakes are very rare for France. In fact I can't remember hearing about any recent ones.

Besides mountainous areas, Charente and Vendée are also believed to be vulnerable. The problem is almost all buildings in Europe are not resistant for seismic movements at all.

Thought I'd throw in an image of the Midwest's sleeping giant. Pretty scary. St. Louis and Memphis would have enormous destruction - old brick buildings everywhere.
Even worse, it's basically impossible to study the fault. It's buried under hundreds of meters of wet river sediment - not a chance of ever getting down there.

Experienced some 6.0+ earthquakes in Chile and Argentina, though they seemed to be very deep as there was little damage. Though the shaking was intense

I don't know why but the PNW has been eerily quiet for so long. It's a bit disconcerting, because it shouldn't be this quiet.
Stresses continually building up until an utterly catastrophic quake occurs? Fuck, I don't wanna be here for that...

Croatia just got hit by a 6.3M earthquake. Haven't seen any pics of damage but I'd expect there to be quite serious damage.
