This battle features 2 relatively moderate climates by East Asian standards... one in the highlands of Yunnan and one on the coast of Fukushima. Lijiang
Iwaki climate boxIwaki recordsWhich shall you select?

tij I'm guessing oceanic climates are your favorite. Winter is the most important season for me, so I don't think there's going to be a climate we both like lol

Speagles84 I was just trying to find 2 "mild climates without extremes" in the region to try and compare them... If I had to actually select good climates in E Asia for me, my personal preferences would go a bit cooler than these two (Sendai (an island off the coast there) and Zhaotong?)...

@qidb602 Yes! Those were the type of climates I was looking for in China! I really like these "seasonal" subtropical highland climates... The only other types of this climate I could find were in Murree/Shimla and São Joaquim, Brazil. My major complaint would be that it's too "washed out" (difficult to avoid in Southern China w/ mountains!) and as you said, I would be concerned about winter gloom (perhaps it's more manageable than NW Europe due to the stronger sun and longer winter days?). I'd still think while the summers are definitely better and probably less muggy than Ishinomaki (which surprisingly has comparable temps, despite a totally different layout!), I would probably still narrowly choose that climate for sunshine + more manageable precip levels, but I think highland Hunan could be more interesting for me weatherwise, so it would be a tough choice. Perhaps a rain-shadowed microclimate in the area could edge Ishinomaki out? Or somewhere that still gets winter rain but more crisp, sunny days like Yunnan as well? Definitely probably similar to the best climate in China for me!
I am probably going for Lijiang in this climate battle, since Iwaki is too muggy during the summer and less comfortable overall, its main advantage being better winter precip and cooler winter highs. I'd appreciate the crisp, sunny days in Lijiang during the winter, even if highs are a bit too warm for me! Would you still take Sendai further north over Lijiang? Miyako?
Also, do you know why Kunming gets much sunnier winters than Hunan, the Yangtze River Delta, or (especially) Sichuan? Less exposure to maritime airmasses during the winter?

Sendai and Miyako have cold winters and Sendai is too cloudy so I think I'd prefer Lijiang. The Sichuan basin tends to trap clouds and fog. I'm not so sure about why Kunming is sunnier than the Lower Yangtze, but it has to be something caused by the geography and topography of the region. Maybe air coming from the Indian Ocean?

Ah, @qidb602 ! I was debating choosing between Sendai and Iwaki for the battle, as I wanted to pick the climate with the closest annual avg mean to Lijiang. I was somewhat concerned that all the cold lovers would just go for Sendai because of the colder winters (and all the cold haters would disdain it), so wanted to pick something not quite as warm as Choshi or Tokyo but a bit warmer than Sendai.

Iwaki is far superior. Decent climate but definitely not cold or snowy enough.
