The streets are a wet, muddy, slushy mess right now. Hopefully the much warmer temperatures we'll be getting this week will accelerate the snow melt and get everything dried out soon enough...

In Lund, Sweden, the first shrubs and trees are starting to get their leaves. (not mine) In Lund, Denmark, some willows seem to have gotten leaves on the 8th of March (unless the color balance is all off and the willow is actually yellow from catkins but looks green)(also not my image) Meanwhile, in Umeå, yesterday I went to my ex's place. I'd been outside at like 7pm, then at 12pm when we went out to poop the doggo, it had fallen over 10cm of snow. Everything was covered in snow, and it looked like quite the winter wonderland. It was like 1'C too so it was perfect snowball fight weather. Pretty cool because since it was midnight, there were no footsteps anywhere. Looked pretty weird with all the ground on roads and stuff covered in perfectly untouched snow. Doggo played around in it a lot. He managed to get a lot of snow stuck in his fur though - a testament to how sticky it was. Look at the size of that snowball lmao! The most perfect footprint. Should've brought my winter boots. Then the next morning, due to 2'C and 100% RH, about 2/3 of it had melted, and none of the snow was left on the trees.

Finally I have some time for posting last week's pictures (I'm too busy in these weeks... ) Anyway, during the last week I had to go in the high part of the valley for doing some paperwork. Here are a couple of pictures takes along the road: ^I've already wrote a lot about that building in hereHere there is a little curious squirrel from a Turin tree-lined road (I had to zoom in quite a lot because he was some meters away, with a cellphone camera that's the result :/ ) A couple of sunsets (finally the sunset is late enough to allow me to see still some light when I return back home, at 7 pm or so) ^ mountains cover the most of the actual sunset, consider that the tallest ones are on the west side of the valley Warm foehn wind days, this was Saturday: ^if 12°C if spring, this is summer, isn't it? ^ these flowers in my village are nick-named "March flowers". Guess why?

Long batch of White Mountains photos coming up. I'll try to keep similar ones under spoilers. First day I did a short hike as I spent a lot of the day getting my car repaired. Went to Lonesome Lake in Franconia Notch. Day started cloudy, had snowed a bit the day before and a lot more the day before that. Near the trailhead. bike path appears inaccessible to bicycles right now packed down trail lake was frozen over and safe to walk over. Franconia Range in the background telephoto of the Franconia Range current temperature near Lonesome Lake (about 2800 feet / 800 m) was 21°F. Windy on the lake and anywhere open though not much wind in the trees. Heard above treeline felt nasty with the cold + wind on the way back on the lake nice views on the hike down hard to see trail signs all sunny now, back at the trailhead easy to see where treeline starts on the Franconia Range

Hiking from Pisa to Florence: Arrival in Pisa: High diurnal range on the first day, from below freezing to t-shirt weather. Walking along a renaissance-era aqueduct: Blossoms: Large areas of burnt forest in the Monte Pisano: Old monastry on a mountain top: It was rainy the next day, so not many pics: Castle town of Vicopisano: Sunny again on the next days. Some forest looked very much like Central Europe: Snow-capped Apennine mountains in the background: Residing in a quaint countryside cottage: Olive groves wre ubiquitous: Arriving in Vinci: Nice sunset: Final stage the next day. Medival mills along the trail: Etruscan artefacts in the hills west of Florence: Finally arrival in Florence in the rain:

how deep was the snow above 400 m ? NidarosWould guessimate around 40-50 cm @ 400 m. A snow recording weather station nearby @ 258 m asl had 30 cm snow on the ground.

next day in the Whites. Wanted to hike Mt. Jefferson, peak just to the north of Mt. Washington; and then Mt. Washington and go back a different way. Unfortuntately, was tired and slow so ended up only getting Jefferson. Amount of climbing was actually slightly more than Washington as I had to descend a bit and then climb again. Mostly frustrated that I was slow and didn't get to return a different, more scenic way. Woke up very early. Strange temperature pattern with altitude fast change half an hour later looking down the valley from the trailhead after a short walk parallel to the cog morning view of the higher peaks. I think that's Washington on the left, not a sub-peak trail wasn't well trodden, there had been snowfall the previous days. Saturday was dry and not too cold, so the trail probably had at least a few hikers to pack down the trail but not many since. Think only one or two had hiked since, make the trail have rather loose snow cute little bridge couldn't wait to get some sun nice open spot on the trail some similar views from the same area whoever had hiked the trail before had turned around, top 6-12" inches of trail was fresh. Hard to find blazes (maybe buried under snow?) but usually was easy to find the route. Just where the gap between trees was largest. Also used my phone's GPS on a topo app to check. Was tiring to be the first to break a steep trail; met another hiker and we switched off on who broke through first. Rabbits were the first on the trail. At least I think it was rabbits couple more snowy forest photos finally above treeline looking back down towards Jefferson almost windless getting to treeline but by 5000 feet was a decent breeze. Kinda icy once I reached the ridgeline + not much space to position my feet. Took off snowshoes, put on crampons. Hard to go fast and I felt tired waking up early. looking towards Washington from near the summit. didn't stay on the summit long, was too windy; wind was a lot better off the summit cone. At the summit temperature probably in the mid to upper 10s °F with 25-30 mph winds. other direction from Washington. 5700 foot Adams, a few dozen taller than Washington and back at Washington short steep tricky spot on the trail. Cairns + footsteps marked the obvious route. Though occasionally cairns were buried wished I could keep going to Washington but it was way too late, hung over at the trail junction for almost half an hour. On the way down Washington in the distance late afternoon temperatures descending back into treeline back in the trees open view halfway down

This is at ~200 m ASL
Evening in the town. This was at 19:20. That mountain reaches up to 1000 m ASL.

I miss the snow already. nei I can see why you want to go back to those mountains. Very beautiful out there! thanks. Wish I were closer…only a few areas of the Whites have "big" mountains. Next day, Franconia Ridge, tallest peak is 5260, 1000 feet shorter than the Presidentials but it has a nice, narrow ridge above treeline. Less tired, was faster. Also checked my phone to make sure I kept a good pace, since I haven't been in as good shape lately, a fast uphill wasn't natural. Total was a 9 mile loop with about 3800 feet of elevation gain. Annoying thing is the trailhead starts by I-93, and unless there's wind or running water noise the traffic noise carries for a while. The other hike I did started a side road and felt much quieter and remote. Air felt very still. Anyhow, first view on the trail. mild temperatures, but above treeline was forecast to warm to 40°F and nowhere close yet view down to Franconia Notch and I-93 trail follows these bumps; alternates between almost flat and very steep. Sun finally peeking out; had been a bit of snow overnight and milder air followed. Lots of low-level clouds and mountains were stuck in the clouds. Bit of blue sky popped, looked promising. But the mountains catch the clouds. hut is closed for the winter; during the summer you can stay overnight with $. Or just buy a snack. Hung out here and talked to people. Some people said the ridge was hard to follow in the fog. Some made it to the first peak (Lafayette) and then turned around. All who were on the ridge said it was windy up there but manageable. Those who had gone the other direction in the loop and made their across the ridge said going down from Lafayette was icy and hard to follow looking back about to enter the fog. Cloud level was about 4800 feet, which I announced on the shoutbox, I was hoping everyone would follow avidly for every update almost to the summit lost the trail for a short icy section, then re-found. Footprints helped. Not very interesting summit, then got lost for a short time going down ice make the obvious trail hard to spot. used my phone GPS and then found the trail, trail afterwards was very easy to follow. Now I understood why some going my direction gave up and didn't bother continue on the ridge while those coming on the ridge and going from the other direction had no problems. right around where I got lost for a few minutes. Rather windy, too much easier to follow, even with thick fog, rocks outlined the trail clouds broke; everyone I talked to earlier was in the clouds. Leaving late worked out well for me other direction to Lincoln. Wind picked up on Lincoln, less segment I wasn't enjoying the wind and just wanted to get down quickly clouds passing below remainder of the ridge after Lincoln with a cloud gliding by couple more warmed up to 40°F at 5300 feet (elevation of Lafayette, and a bit higher than most of the ridge. couple spots on the ridge were slushy, which was kinda annoying but harm anything descent was on a steeper trail, was extremely fast. Felt much warmer out of the wind. Trail followed a stream and mostly frozen waterfalls at the end. not much space between the steep slope of the trail and the ice short and steep stream melts the deep snow almost back to the parking lot. Think those are called the Canon cliffs (on Canon mountain) neat clouds from the parking lot took the same photo with slightly different clouds

Case study of the rapidly advancing subarctic twilight:
11 March 18:26:
This is facing north-west and notice how dominant the northerly twilight is already nine days before the equinox. Looking towards the old castle by the river.
21 March 18:59 facing west on Hamnvägen (Harbour Road).
24 March 18:35 facing straight north on Folkungavägen.
Quite an astonishing difference this time of the year. It's also worth nothing in context that Nyköping is eight minutes ahead of GMT+1, which means that natural solar times for these would be 18:34, 19:07 and 18:43.
