19.8°C in computer room. Is that heated or unheated? 20C indoors here too, unheated. I've never felt the need to put the heating on in October since I moved here before, I think it'll probably go down to 17 or 18 with the chilly night ahead tonight but I'll probably hold out until November anyway, since I'm funny like that.

No heating yet today, the sun was coming into the room. It will go on in a couple of hours as it cools down rapidly tonight. I've had my convector heater on lots of times this month (there's no central heating here), and it's been down to 10 degrees a few times in here already this month. I live in the roof so wind plummets the temperature as well. I only use the heater to maintain a temperature of 18°C - and only when I'm in the room (it's off whenever I'm out). Overnight it gets down to about 12-13°C this time of year.

I haven't turned my heat on yet. Right now it's 68 F/20 C.

Does anyone else use a thermostat? The idea of heating being "on" or "off" on certain times or dates seems odd to me, simply cause I use it to maintain a minimum acceptable temperature. So it would be on whenever the temp goes below that level, which could happen even in the summer, should it get cold enough (and it has done).

Last winter I set it at 55 F/13 C when not at home, but I think this year I will have it set at 60 F/16 C when away and 63 F/17 C when home. I try to minimize my A/C use as much as possible so I only turn it on when I'm at home. I'll set it around 74 F/23 C or 75 F/24 C when it's running.

I have a thermostat, but I only turn the heating on at all if I feel uncomfortably cold, my heating bills aren't very high anyway but it seems a waste having it on otherwise.

I guess the difference is as I don't have central heating it has no "on" or "off", whereas I assume you have a furnace or something that has to be lit.
It's been down to 12°C in my flat a few times even in summer, so my electric heating comes on because obviously that's freezing!
When I'm sitting around my minimum thermostat temperature is 18°C, because below that is too cold for me, and that's wearing several layers. On rare occasions I can tolerate less than that, mainly heating is needed to get the temp up from the low levels in the morning (in winter about 8-10°C) which takes a lot more power.
In summer it goes down to 15-17°C overnight, but usually rises naturally without heating required. Heating bills here are still pretty low, about £300 (I worked it out wrong before). Obviously with summers as cold as here it's never wasteful using heating any time of year, given how cold it gets in here, which is very unhealthy.

Why 16C when you're out, just so it's comfortable when you get back home? My heating's not on a timer, so if I did that I'd have to be heating an empty apartment all day. I went away for two weeks in January this year and left my apartment completely unheated, since there's no danger of pipes etc freezing I didn't see the point even if I did come back to an indoor temp of 9C - could you take that risk in your climate?

God in my old house I lived in our boiler was replaced (old one was knackered) in January one year, and in the two days it took to fit a new one it went down to 4°C inside the house!!!!!!!! I wasn't actually there at the time but my family was, I just so happened to have an indoor weather station that recorded the record lo and hi. Anyway, having reached 20°C just earlier, now the sun has set it's down to 18°C already, getting chilly in here again.

The main reason I leave it on is to eliminate the risk of pipes freezing. The average low in January is is -9 C and the average high doesn't rise above 4 C until late February so I definitely couldn't take that risk. There can be the odd day or two when I can get away with turning off the heat if it's unusually mild but for the most part is stays on. I'm thinking of leaving it on 16 C because I figure I use more gas trying to heat the place up from 13 C to 17 C when I get home at night.

Electric heater (for one room only) is on now, so it will keep the temp up to 18°C I turn it off one hour before bed, and it will get down to around 11°C in the apartment by 10AM.

Still haven't turned the heat on yet but I think I might be tested this week: Forecast low of 37 F/3 C tonight, high 54 F/12 C tomorrow, tomorrow night 30 F/-1 C, and Wednesday a high of only 50 F/10 C
