How would you guys rate Vancouver's climate in 2018? I'd probably give it a "C" on my Vancouver scale otherwise it would get a D-. Summer was warmer and drier than average which saves it from getting an F. Keep in mind, the station for Vancouver is located at the airport which is situated adjacent to the sea; consequently this doesn't allow for a large temp spread especially during the summer where a light seabreeze can keep temps more than 10C cooler when compared with places just a few km inland. For this reason, I've also added in Abbotsford, a major city ~75km(45mi) inland from Vancouver, which generally has more spread in extreme high/low temps. Would you guys prefer Abbotsford's climate in 2018 to Vancouver? (First attachment is Vancouver, second is Abbotsford)

F+ for Vancouver and E- for Abbottford. Too warm/wet during the winter for your liking? IMO...Jan and Dec were absolute crapfests with far too much mild rain. The only winter month which turned out decent was Feb with a two week period of cold and snow.

Summer is warmer than normal so I'll be generous and give a C-. Normal Vancouver is a D+.
High end of C- for Abbotsford.

C-
Plain average. Too rainy in winter, while summer as usual was very give and take.

Not every year that summer is free from drizzle. It's slightly worse than here on the two official stations, but at the same time Richmond is at 24ยฐC and thus a stronger C- than here.
I just hate single-digit rain so much! That's why.

Yeah single digit rain sucks but we need it during winter here. Many winters during the past decade have featured many days with 8-12C rain during the winter thus decimating the snowpack....as we have dry summers this causes a concern for our water supply. Another thing regarding our winters recently...January has torched. Per historic averages, it's our snowiest and coldest month, yet YVR hasn't recorded more than 1cm of snow during Jan since 2012! Last sub -10C temp is even worse...you have to go all the way back to 2004 to find one in Jan.

Pretty sad state of affairs here as far as minimum temps go, even during relatively decent winter months like Feb 2019, Feb 2018, and the entire 16-17 winter. Hopefully it can turn around soon. I blame the Pacific.

I blame the Pacific. I don't think the blob effects temps all too much during winter arctic outbreaks. The warm waters play more of a roll during marginal snow events (i.e. NW systems, coastal sliders) as the warmer ocean temps will push up our air temps by a degree or two thus turning a sure snow event into rain - this is where we've lost a lot of our average snowfall over the past few decades. The reason for the decline of extreme cold (sub -10C) is due to the direction/source of the arctic air. Our most infamous arctic outbreaks occur when a strong arctic high descends from the Yukon/NWT and settles in the central interior of BC with a strong N/NE flow. These generally used to occur once or twice per year thus guaranteeing YVR with at least two or three nights below -10C every year. Even the 1981-2010 averages reflect this; YVR averages just under two days below -10C per year. Compare this classic setup with what we've seen recently. Our recent arctic blasts have had a strong E/NE gradient; this results in less extreme lows with higher temps due to down-sloping....this is the reason why places such as Oregon performed so well during winters such as 2013-14 and 2016-17 relative to us further north in Vancouver.

Vancouver is an F+ from me, it can't get higher than an F for having never seen an 86+ยฐF day in summer.
Abbotsford is better by miles; it gets a C- from me, as it at least has a semblance of a summer, even though there is a deluge of winter cold rain.

Abbotsford is better by miles; it gets a C- from me, as it at least has a semblance of a summer, even though there is a deluge of winter cold rain. And it can get even wetter than that in the winter. The suburbs to the north and northeast of Vancouver frequently see winter months with 300-400mm+ of never-ending precip. Case in point, last January, a rain gauge in the suburb of Coquitlam (at the foot of the mountains about 25-30km NE of Vancouver), recorded 685.3mm of precip for the month. From around the 12th through the 18th, it was mostly snow but the rest of the month was all rain.
