Here are two mountain climates in different parts of the world with several features in common. They are both on the leeward side of their respective mountain range and both climates are influenced by downsloping foehn winds. The foehn can make it easier for Susanville to achieve above average temperatures during cold season ridging, as shown in the current forecast: Susanville gets about 15 thunderstorm days a year, less than Cooma. Snow can be very hit or miss in Susanville depending on year. Some years record under 10" while others can record over 50". Coldest month on record (Jan 1949) averaged 25.2/0.3 - that’s like an Edmonton winter! Wettest months on record are over 10” as well, making Susanville a very variable and unstable climate by California standards.

Susanville, CA
Wetter and much snowier winters. However, the frigid minima and lack of storms are extremely worrying.
Lovely thread idea, too!

Cooma since it has a more even precip pattern and is wetter.

Susanville is better but only because of the winters.
Cooma has better summers but the winters are pretty lacklustre.

Susanville for being far more interesting—snowier, more variable, colder winters, hotter summers.
Cooma is good for Australia but just can’t compete.

Cooma easily. Susanville is too hot in summer and I don't like the rainfall pattern.
