Dark maritime tundra, no frosts, even getting some early tastes of March allergies

Horribly cold month...Trondheim Airport (Værnes) in January 1987. Imaging freezing your ass off day after day, shivering through a whole month like January 1987, the coldest Jan ever recorded here. Sure hope I don't have to experience anything like that, brrrr. It could get even worse, Røros was truly Siberian-like in that month:

Looks horrible especially with the sub -15°C highs [were they all in the afternoon or was there little diurnal cycle?] Looks like the cold was windy though not quite as bad as "our arctic blasts", which often get 30 km/hr winds especially at the beginning. Looks like only January 9-19 was really bad; end had some mild days. Looks like the cold was very consistent once it set at least for the deepest cold week, big swings before and after.

It's only a -8.9'C month. That happens every other year even in Umeå.

This was January 1987 in Bingley. Only our second-coldest January on record (since 1973) because January 1979 was more consistently cold, but that -8.8C high on the 11th is our coldest day on record and -6.4C the day after is our second coldest. The run of 10 ice days in a row is also a record.

Boombo: I guess Bingley weather station is not well placed to pool cold air during inversion? Still the number of ice days are pretty good.
Værnes is an airport so the flat area can pool some cold air during inversions. The 10. look very special. Too bad data for Røros is lacking that day, might have been a -40c - high day there!

Not sure when the highs were, at that time of year it is mostly pretty random.

Average highs between mid-January and mid-February only warm up by 3 degrees! Why is the warmup here so slow? Ugghhhhhhh

And since I was presenting the misery of that horrible January 1987 in Trondheim and Røros, let's look at an airport at the coast/outer seabord at the same latitude - Kristiansund Airport (01223, not to be confused with Kristians and) Probably also their coldest January. A -12C high even there.

The Spring Warmup in the Northeast US is slower than Portugal's economic recovery
