A: perfect dream climates with plenty of sunshine, good summers and mild to warm winters. Eg Perth, Brisbane, Crete, much of the southern med.
B: good climates but a couple of flaws - eg California (cold sea temperatures and lack of storms), northern Mediterranean (winters too cold), tropical climates (no variety year round and I do like a bit of seasonal change)
C: climates with an equal number of positives and flaws. The negatives of a cold winter outweighs the positives of a warm summer for me. Places I'd be fairly happy still though. E.g hot desert climates like found in the northern middle east with dry heat (not Dubai for example) and summer temps in the high 30s/low 40s but dry year round and dry heat.
D: climates with more negatives than positives. Either poor sunshine or a cold winter with regular snow/freezing temperatures. Eg London, lots of Western Europe, New York, Chicago, Boston.
E: same as D but a much longer cold season with poor summers eg lots of northern Europe including Scandinavia. Scotland, Ireland, Faroe islands, Denmark, eastern Europe. All for being too cold in winter/ not sunny enough or a mixture. These climates are unliveable for me but slightly better than an F.
F. Reserved for truly suicidal climates with no summer and no warmth ever and low sunshine hours. Considered putting climates like Dubai here too but I actually think I'd be much happier with sun even if half of the year is too hot to be outside comfortably

Benfxmth pretty sure Buffalo gets more thunderstorms than McAllen. Far southern Texas doesnβt get many Well yeah, somehow I misremembered that one and thought there was going to be a bit more in south TX than parts of upstate NY, I stand corrected. Doesn't really change the spirit of my climate ratings much, though fair enough; Using Brownsville as it isn't far away:

A: climates that have only minor flaws. They need to be comfortable year-round with some seasonality including a warm summer and cool winter, be decently wet without a long dry season, but not extremely wet, and have acceptable sunshine. A+ climates are limited to parts of the Pampas.
EX: Buenos Aires, Sydney, Rome
B: climates that don't fulfill the A criteria but are still good overall, including climates with a short uncomfortable season, low seasonality, precipitation issues, sunshine issues, or a combination thereof.
EX: New York City, Tokyo, Mexico City, Sao Paulo, Madrid
C: climates that are about average, often either with an unpleasant season or decent temperatures but other flaws, most often too dry.
EX: Chicago, London, Hong Kong, Los Angeles, Bogota
D: climates that are considerably unpleasant, or in rare cases extremely boring, but livable
EX: Montreal, Dublin, New Delhi, Singapore, Lima
E/F: intolerable climates, uncomfortable for half of the year or more, often difficult to imagine how bad they are
EX: Moscow, Reykjavik, Dubai

A: Excellent climates with few flaws. Examples: Armidale, NSW Tres Arroyos, Argentina Asheville, NCMaubourguet, FranceB: Good climates with issues. Tropical highland climates with pleasant temps and lots of storms fall in the low end of this range. Examples: Fort Collins, Lexington, Turin, Tokyo, Buenos Aires, Rome, Mexico City C: Year round meh climates, boring but pleasant climates, or those where one season is very good but a couple months are shit. Examples: Rochester, London, San Diego, Savannah D: Bad but not awful. Usually a good portion of the year is pleasant if part of it is extreme. Or long period of bad but not awful weather ie. very long but only moderately cold winters. Or bad precipitation combined with bad but not terrible temps Examples: Las Vegas, Minneapolis, Oslo, Perth, Hong Kong, Vancouver E: Horrible but livable climates. At least a few pleasant months. Extreme precipitation causing few months to be pleasant as well. Examples: Miami, Phoenix, Fairbanks, Bergen F: Unlivable climates. Most equatorial climates with lots of storms as a redeeming feature get an F+. No pleasant months, extreme uninhabitable cold, or constant extreme precipitation Examples: Singapore, Campbell Island, Oymyakon, Barrow
