This is a thread for discussing the weather and climate through the 2010s. Now that the decade is over, what did it look like in your area? How did it compare to the long-term averages? What sort of interesting and memorable events occurred? I was quite curious about what this decade looked like in Saskatoon so I went through the trouble of compiling the averages for the decade (not that I expect anyone else to do such for their weather station, it's quite a lot of work). Overall it was very slightly below-average compared to the 30 year averages (2.5C yearly mean vs 2.6C for the long-term averages). Some interesting notes: -------------------------- • The 2010s were significantly sunnier than the long-term averages, which isn't really surprising as the three sunniest years on record occurred during this decade (2011, 2013, and 2015), and 2018 was also in the top 10, which made this decade over 200 hours sunnier than the averages. • Summer heatwaves and winter cold snaps were less extreme than in previous decades. This is quite obvious when you look at the average record highs for the summer months, all in the low 30s. I haven't bothered to calculate them for previous decades but temperatures in the high 30s were something we experienced almost every year back in the '90s and '00s but barely happened at all in the '10s. Likewise, only a single winter month has a record low in the -40s whereas this was much more common in previous couple of decades. • February was on average the coldest month of the decade, rather than January - this is probably because the last two Februaries were both extremely cold. This is a pretty big departure from normal because January is on average about 3C colder than February. • April was noticeably cooler (likely due to April 2013 and 2018, which were both phenomenally cold) while September was warmer than average despite Sept 2018 also being phenomenally cold. This seems to be a trend, unlike April's cooler averages this decade - September has felt more and more like a late summer month than like the real start of fall in recent years. • The 2010s were slightly wetter in terms of precipitation days and slightly drier in terms of precipitation totals. The month that saw the biggest change was June, which went from about 60mm to 80mm. Spring and early summer were wetter than average, winter was drier, early fall slightly drier and late fall slightly wetter.

2010s were the •warmest decade ever •2nd wettest (after the 1870s). Thankfully we have Nowdata so this data is super easy to access. Warmest year: 51.8 f (2012) Coldest year: 47.7 f (2014) Wettest year: 45.37” (2017) Driest year: 30.72” (2016) Snowiest year: 112.2” (2018) Least snowy year: 78.1” (2012) Hottest temp: 98 f (July 21, 2011) Lowest temp: -12 f (Feb 14, 2016) Highest low: 75 f Lowest high: 4 f (Jan 6, 2018) It featured several of the warmest years on record (since 1872) 1. 2012 5. 2016 7. 2017 2017 was also the 3rd wettest year The decade has the record warmest February, March, May, August and December. February 2015 was the coldest month ever. In total, there were 21 top 10 warm months vs. only 2 top 10 cold months. No monthly records were set. Deviations from 1981-2010: Jan: +0.7 f Feb: +0.5 f Mar: +0.8 f Apr: +0.3 f May: +3.4 f Jun: +1.0 f Jul: +2.3 f Aug: +1.4 f Sep: +2.7 f Oct: +2.4 f Nov: 0.0 Dec: +2.5 f The deviation for May is incredible. Here’s a weatherbox:

I'll post a proper summary in a few days once I'm feeling better, but the 2010s generally were warmer and much cloudier than the 81-10 average.
January and August showed slight decreases in average highs, while December surprisingly ended up warmer than previous decades, even including 2010!
July was much warmer than August, when normally they are about equal.

Noticeably warmer, but the rainfall, sunshine and rain days are almost average.

I feel alive enough today, so here are the 2010s decadal averages for London. Not sure whether the horizon has changed at Heathrow or whether it's just natural variation, but this decade was over 100 hours down on the 81-10 sun averages. The last 2-3 years have shown a recovery, so lets hope it was just a blip like in the 1960s.
August rainfall, rain days and sunshine stats stand out like a sore thumb when looking at July and September.

Impressive for its not-so-inland position!

Hope this is accurate, because this took a long time. Against long term averages, mins are +0.3C, max +0.8C, rainfall -41.1mm. May was consistently dry during the decade, -27.6mm, June wetter than normal +30.9mm. September saw no change. Sunshine data is from Sydney Airport. Hottest year max temps 2019 (25.2C) Hottest year min temps 2016 (12.9C) Hottest year mean temps 2016 and 2019 (18.9C) Coldest year max temps 2011 (23.1C) Coldest year min temps 2012 (11.7C) Coldest year mean temps 2012 (17.5C) Wettest year 2016 (973.8mm) Driest year 2019 (601.8mm) Sunniest year 2013 (7.8hrs average, ~2847hrs) Cloudiest year 2011 (6.6hrs average ~2409hrs)

Umeå has been slightly sunnier this decade than the last. Summer has been slightly cooler, brought down by August, and winter has been colder, brought down by January. Spring however has been warmer this decade, at least in terms of highs. Three temperature record highs have been set or equaled this decade, in May, July and December. One record low has been set, in September 2014 (For some reason the weatherbox on Wikipedia seems to have ignored that record low?). Winter has been wet and ever so slightly gloomier than average, whereas early summer has been dry and pretty sunny. Spring has also been sunny. This decade has been decent, but it would've been a much better one if it weren't for the massive zit that is 2010 and the winter of 2010/2011.

Sadly without precipitation because the DWD morons have erased 2004-2017 precipitation for all German stations a few months ago and my old pc is broken where I had an old file saved containing all precip-data But it will be in the 500s mm range for sure.
November, December, January and February got cloudier compared to 1981-2010. March avg low a little bit colder, the rest warmer and sunnier.
Without 2010 winter would be a good chunk warmer and summer slightly cooler. I think 2010 was the best year I have ever experienced weatherwise.

Last decade was the warmest in history, and that is reflected in the climate data. Comparing to 81-10 it's good to remember that the main weather station changed from the airport to Artukainen, resulting in consistently higher lows, so the change has not been simply due to AGW.
Difference in means compared to 81-10:
Jan: -0.3C Feb: +1.6C Mar: +1.0C Apr: +0.5C May: +1.3C June: +0.8C July: +1.3C Aug: +1.3C Sep: +1.5C Oct: +0.2C Nov: +2.2C Dec: +2.2C YEAR: +1.2C
All months have warmed except for January, which is a good argument against short 10-year averages. In general Januaries have warmed up by 1C. The warming in Nov and Dec is absolutely bonkers. Precipitation has decreased by almost 100 mm a year.
Jan: -14 mm Feb: -4 mm Mar: -12 mm Apr: +1 mm May: -5 mm June: -10 mm July: -22 mm Aug: -2 mm Sep: -1 mm Oct: -18 mm Nov: +13 mm Dec: +13 mm YEAR: -87 mm
Less cold rain in crummer, more cold rain in late autumn and early winter.
Very interesting that Umeå has managed a warmer record high in March, which is also shocking. Fucken cold arctic Baltic Sea. It also had a warmer Jan record, but that was corrected just days ago.

Umeå having a warmer January record wasn't corrected days ago. First of all, "days ago" is a different decade, and second of all, our all-time January high is 10.5'C which is also higher than what you managed a few days ago. I figured I'd review the last decade's sun hour levels for a few places. Why couldn't they just have 2 stations? Stupid to mix stations, very AJ-esk

There is/was a trend to get rid of the airport stations, and for the city itself, Artukainen represents it better. The airport closed in summer 2010 and for some reason reopened last June, so it wouldn't even been possible for me to use one single station.

A pretty epic decade overall. Warmer, wetter, and snowier than the 1981-2010 normals. 9 monthly records were set, as well as the wettest year on record in 2018. Record warm months: - February 2017
- March 2012
- April 2017
- May 2018
- September 2019
Record wet months:
- February 2018
- April 2011
- September 2018

For Orly airport, deviations are these compared to the 1981-2010 normals: Jan: +0.4°C Feb: +0.2°C Mar: +0.5°C Apr: +0.9°C May: +0.1°C June: +0.8°C July: +0.9°C Aug: +0.3°C Sep: +0.5°C Oct: +0.8°C Nov: +0.9°C Dec: +1.0°C Jan: -1.0 mm Feb: +0.2 mm Mar: -2.6 mm Apr: -15.7 mm May: +11.1 mm June: +27.3 mm July: -7.5 mm Aug: +9.7 mm Sep: -1.9 mm Oct: -14.1 mmNov: +10.4 mm Dec: +10.5 mm
So, overall, a warmer than average decade (unsurprisingly...). The yearly max almost tops 37°C Steelernation . Precip changes are erratic, there's no clear wet season in Paris and the wettest month changes from a normal to another. Early spring is clearly the driest time of the year though.
