I know they are both crazy, but you guys decide which ones are crazier.

Melbourne. It gets almost as high as Renmark in terms of annual maximums but the cold fronts that come after the heat spikes affect it way more. So in a way, it falls further.
Say Renmark gets to 46C and Melbourne gets to 41C. The next day, a cold front comes through and drops Renmark to about 27C but Melbourne to 19C.

Does Renmark have higher diurnal temperature ranges? Once, my brother looked at the weather in Renmark and the high was 38 and the low was 9. Pretty crazy, but I am conflicted if that is crazier than a sunny and muggy 32Β° day followed by a rainy and windy 18Β° day.

In general, Renmark does have higher diurnal ranges due to lower humidity and sand based soil. However, in terms of temperature swings from day-to-day maximums then definitely Melbourne has it beat. Also you'll have to confirm with Beercules but I believe the airport is in such a position where it gets way higher diurnals than the town itself which is located next to a river. The hot days in Melbourne have very low humidity too, sometimes in the single digits because we get the same desert air that they do.

If you count my climate as having """summers""", then I'd tie Renmark but lose to Melbourne regarding summer-time variability. As for the most contrasting summer temperatures, I'd probably edge that due to the fact that it can get very cold in summer hereβmy most recent summer snowfall was on 02 December 2019, with a maximum of just 5.3Β° C that day (and that maximum was set in the evening, with most of the daylight between β1Β° and 3Β° C with snow showers).
Nothing beats South-Western VIC for summer variability, however; therefore, Melbourne > Renmark.

Probably Melbourne according to Beercules. He claimed Melbourne in summer was London with some 40c days thrown in.
