found a cool site that makes plots of air quality over time for US cities. www.epa.gov/outdoor-air-quality-data/air-data-multiyear-tile-plotwith the coronavirus shutdowns, Los Angeles is getting the cleanest stretch of air in decades; looks like it was horrible in the 80s in summer the Springfield metro, where I used to live. where I lived was on the northern edge of the metro further from the northeast corridor so probably a bit better NYC metro has improved a lot in 15 years. Coronavirus improvement less obvious Miami generally has clean air from breezes off the Atlantic San Francisco is usually good for a major cities; recent spikes are from forest fires

It says a maximum of 25 years. How did you get it to do 1980-2020 nei?

Here's Bangkok's averages over the past few years. As you can see, winter is pretty bad but the wet season is alright. It's seasonal because of the prevailing winds and the practice of burning sugarcane fields in winter.

found a cool site that makes plots of air quality over time for US cities. with the coronavirus shutdowns, Los Angeles is getting the cleanest stretch of air in decades; looks like it was horrible in the 80s in summer LA used to be worse. Here are several pictures of smog from the 1950s. I don't know if any data was kept back then. I wonder what the worst was, historically? Many cities that are clean now were very polluted in the past. It could even be an ancient city. I think Ancient Rome had smog. timeline.com/la-smog-pollution-4ca4bc0cc95d

Los Angeles looks like it slowly improved throughout the 80s, makes me wonder how bad the 70s were

You can see the bushfire effects here pretty clearly lol. This is for Brooklyn, an industrial suburb in western Melbourne This is in Canberra. A normally clean city, as you'd expect, it got hammered in December and early January.

Holy fuck, London must have been insanely depressing back then. If I had the misfortune of living there at the time I would have left for sure. But where would have been better? Probably nowhere in Europe except possibly Iceland, Finland, northern Norway/Sweden.

London was smoggy as hell in the 1800's, nowhere would have compared because London was way more industrialised than most cities at the time and also the largest city in the world. For many the industrial revolution was often a choice between living in a smoggy city or continuing to live as a poor farmer. The reason why the west end became the more desirable area of cities is because wind usuall blew from west to east, so the poor would live in the part with the worst air quality.

Ah well in that case I would have made my way over to Wrexham and had many offsprings to plough the fields and milk the goats and slaughter the chickens.
