***Data is for Nelson but let's just call it Motueka.*** According to Joe, and I don't doubt him at all, Motueka's summers are much more stagnant and humid than Alexandra's, which are windy with lower dew points. Alexandra for me, no question! One of NZ's best inhabited climates, if not the best.

Well done ππΏMΓΆrΓΆnππΏ , now we're gonna get 10 pages of how Mouteka can grow Lipstick palms and Passionfruit in winter with Kuala Lumpur hot rain 250mm per day.

Alexandra, easily
More variable summers, and proper cold winters with snowfall guaranteed.
Nice thread idea btw.

Alexandra, better summer highs. Probably no ski fields and orange plantations 10 seconds away but summer highs are too important for me. Record lows are probably negative across the board, though.

I'm sure Alexandra has quite consistently cold record lows throughout the year, with its coldest being a modest -11.2Β°C / 12Β°F. I have no idea since I haven't seen the data but I'd guess record lows in summer would be nearing 0Β°C. Hottest temp is apparently 38.7Β°C / 102Β°F there.

Lip sticks palms? - don't think I've said that. A definite yes on the passionfruit though. If it's not cold rain, it doesn't mean that it's hot rain, although I know some struggle with this ideaStewth, spot-on! 100% agreed with you. Some (like AJ) think "cold rain" is anything under 16Β° Cβ¦

Stewth, spot-on! 100% agreed with you. Some (like AJ) think "cold rain" is anything under 16° C⦠He was doing a pitch yesterday on how Copenhagen offers the better climate than Motueka for comfortably doing outdoor activities, due to the lack of brutal cold rain that Motueka experiences. I suspect he'd be singing a different tune if he had to put up with month after month of 5C rain. AJ has no mental experience of 5C rain month after month. The barely knows anything outside of 16C-35C.

Oh man this is gonna be fun. btw ππΏMΓΆrΓΆnππΏ , incorrect data. Should be for Farewell spit for lows and 50km north of Wellington for highs. Do pay attention next time you post climate boxes for tropical climates.

You routinely accuse others of twisting your words but thus is not remotely close to what I said yesterday. I said I like Copenhagen more since it has colder winters, warmer summers (by mean), and more variability. I also said copenhagen gets far less precip than Motueka, which to me is not a bonus but since neither get the type of precip I like (Mild Thunderstorms) it doesnβt really matter. Plus Copenhagen gets snow which, imo, is a huge positive.

Good thread idea, so good we'll no doubt have many wonderful conversations about it in the shoutbox throughout the coming months. I vote Alexandra

I'm going with Motueka, mainly due to the sunnier winters. Alexandra gets a lot of fog coming off the river during winter which makes for a pretty depressing atmosphere. Similar vibe to much of east Asia - cold, dry, snowless winters - what's the point? Alexandra does get some bonus points for seasonal variation though. I believe it has the most seasonal range of any climate in NZ.

Alexandra for warmer summers, colder winters, snow, more variability, and more interesting weather.

I'll have to give the edge to Alexandra for being cloudier.

Motueka for being sunnier.
For those who chose Alexandra for being warmer in the summer - Don't forget that the summer nights are pretty cool.
