It would definitely lack the heatwaves. Probably much of the southern shore of the new sea would be like Auckland, while the north would be near-tropical. Canberra probably wouldn't change much.
Of course, that's assuming current elevations are more or less preserved. Copy-paste Algeria's mountains in and it may be different.

Probably more ocean moderated. Better in the north. But worse in the south

The capital cities would be better off up there on that Australian "Mediterranean sea". But I think the summers will be long and humid. Interesting map.
