This is the thread forthe best covers ever, only the creme of the crop! Personally the best covers are the ones that make songs so much better (although I do like an equally good but different take as well).
Definitely my favourite cover is "I will Survive" by Cake, a cover of Gloria Gaynor. I just think taking a late 70s glitzy disco song and putting an early 2000s country-rock spin on it, combined with a different style of singing (he kind of re-writes the song emphasising different parts to make the melody feel different) and an excellent baseline propel this cover to one of the best.

Another great recent one is Ten Fe's cover of Waterfalls by TCL. Once again a huge genre shift with a lot of slow synth.

Dunno for best covers of all times but I really like one of Alanis Morissette's covers of Seal's Crazy.

Bob Dylan is a great writer, but not the most the gifted musician ever.
Dylan's version sounded rushed, Harrison polished it up nicely.

Also preferred the Guns N' Roses version of this track. Although the original is good.

Cover sounds much richer and more enjoyable than the original imo, I actually thought it was the original song initially.
Original (1991):
Cover (2006):
This next one isnβt necessarily better, however I prefer the edgier sound of the cover.

This is one my favorite songs. I really like the original...
But I like this version even better.

Quite an achievement to outdo the original.

Strewthless is it a coincidence I'm reading this post right after playing Pinball on my computer? Anyway, I think Naked Eyes did the definitive version of "Always Something There to Remind Me" in 1982.

Already one of the best Bond themes, but with a heavy metal twist.

Lots of covers of this American folk song, including one in French!

Both versions are great. I like the the dark gothic/emo vibe in the cover, which was a big 80's hit. Contrasts from the more uplifting orginal.

One of the most famous covers of all time. Most think The Beatles wrote this, but it was actually written by two Jewish Guys in New York, and intially recorded by some African American Groups.
