Today record an epic 13.2” (34 cm) of snow! That’s the 2nd snowiest October day ever and just today makes this the 4th snowiest October. The high was 20 (-7 c) at midnight which is the coldest October max ever. Nowdata uses 7PM-7PM though so the high was recorded as 39 (4 c) so we’ll have to wait til tomorrow to officially set the record. NWS has an additional 2-5” falling overnight and a forecast of 14/0 tomorrow! Any pics?

We had a few tenths of an inch of sleet, but then it changed back over to rain. Temps have been hovering right around freezing for the past three hours or so, but there hasn't been any freezing rain accumulation.

5th coldest temp ever recorded in Vancouver this morning...for October. Hopefully a sign of things to come for the winter as that's pretty amazing for October. Wish most of the region saw winds die down more last night so we could've maximized low temps like YVR.

We have a low of -7C and snow in the forecast for tonight, and then we're warming up to 10C tomorrow and above freezing highs through the entire 7-day forecast, including a 12C in stock for Sunday (though of course that will likely change before then).

Damn, there was a -35C at the coop station in Lyman WY this morning, another national record for the date (lower 48) after yesterday's -34C in Potomac MT. Here's another 24h loop starting and ending at 1830 MST. That station in Wyoming's far northwest corner is West Yellowstone (KWYS): images.meteociel.fr/im/7664/anim_tvr1.gif
Edit: The WY reading was deemed unreliable. The coldest reliable reading on the 26th was -30C at several stations in WY. The Montana reading from the 25th is still real.

Today had a high of just 17 (-8 c) which is by far the coldest October max ever (by 5 f).
The previous earliest day with a high this cold? November 9th so this is a full 2 weeks earlier, really unprecedented cold.
We also picked up another 1.3” (3 cm) of snow which brings the storm total to 14.5” (37 cm).
As of 10:10 PM, it’s already down to 3 f (-16 c), so it could easily drop below 0 overnight!

We've gotten about 0.8" (2 cm) of sleet and 0.1" (0.25 cm) of freezing rain since this event started. However, we've received a total of nearly 2" (51 mm) of precipitation, so a lot of it has been rain or freezing rain that failed to accrete. It was 85°F/29.5°C only five days ago, so the prior warmth limited ice accumulations. However, we're supposed to get another batch of ice in the early morning hours, which may knock out my power.

It's gonna be 10C and raining today, possibly our last rain of the year. Only one night below -5C in the forecast, and we've got a couple more double-digit highs coming up as well (though still near the end of the forecast, so that can easily change). Pretty nice change of pace from the early start to winter that we just had.

Considerably warmer here this morning than the last several days thanks to clouds associated with a frontal system hitting the central coast. Lots of active weather associated with this system in both BC and Alberta today with heavy rainfall warnings on the central coast, freezing rain and snowfall warnings in the interior, and wind warnings for southern Alberta. They say there was a big storm in Brisbane yesterday. Looks like a funnel cloud even? About 70 mm fell in 90 minutes at the city weather station.

Final totals look to be about 1.6" (4.1 cm) of sleet and 0.2-0.25" (0.5-0.6 cm) of freezing rain. There are many branches down. I'll add pics of them later. We lost power for about 15 minutes in the morning, but we never got WiFi back, so I'm making this post from a slow mobile hotspot. About half of my county still lacks power. Also, yesterday was our earliest sub-40°F high on record. It's pretty impressive that we had our earliest sub-60 day and earliest sub-40 day in the same fall.

... Crazy stuff, especially when you consider there's a hurricane so close by.

Interesting article about how the slow growth of arctic sea ice extent could influence the autumn weather at low latitudes. In brief: much uncertainty but low sea ice may reinforce a weak polar vortex and contribute to meridional jet stream patterns like the one that's currently contributing to the ice storm in Oklahoma. Difficult to separate cause and effect however. www.severe-weather.eu/news/arctic-ocean-sea-ice-2020-jet-stream-effect-winter-fa/
