Year to date precipitation and deviations for the contiguous US.
Accumulation: I'm the arrow north of Chicago.
Departure: Generally wet in the southeast, mixed in the midwest and northeast, and dry in the northern plains and west.
The map has the driest section (under 10% YTD) near Death Valley, probably in the mountains. Many patches of 10-25%. In the eastern half the driest areas are northern Minnesota which is in the most severe drought category (see post above) and along the Canadian border in the northeast (in moderate to severe drought).
Heavy rain kept missing me to the north or south this summer. It rained but not an all-day soaking rain or a deluge from a stalled thunderstorm. Right along the Wisconsin / Illinois border is some D2 drought (levels go D0 to D4).

D0 conditions added in a good chunk of Northern NJ. There were heavy thunderstorms along the I-80 corridor yesterday but areas further north including mine missed out. droughtmonitor.unl.edu/

Had some much needed rain here in Northern NJ this week that has alleviated some of the drought conditions. Hopefully we can stay out of the D1 category. droughtmonitor.unl.edu/

To complete the podt in the "Rate: drought thread", this is now official: the stress currently inflicted to ecosystems is now unprecedented. We're sailing in unknown seas. 64 mm YTD in Marseille. Nuts.

Recently did a trip to Frankfurt and I gotta say that it looks lush here in comparison to there. About 1 in 5 deciduous trees dead, and the situation looks even more appalling with regards to scots pines. And the forecast is asolutely frightening. Navigation on the Rhine might soon have to come to a halt.

We had 20mm in the final 10 days of July, so the grass is looking rather green again here. Reservoirs still very low though so the talk of a hosepipe ban hasn’t gone away.
5 straight months of below average rainfall and around 290mm YTD.

Hampshire & the Isle of Wight now have a hosepipe ban & next week Sussex & Kent get one too. Lots of trees dropping leaves here already, Horse Chestnuts are almost bare & lots of trees & shrubs wilting. Am enjoying the nice weather though as soon enough it will be pissing down & everyone will be moaning about how wet it is.

Drought has now been declared in much of southern, central & eastern England, including where I live. This will enable water companies to enforce more restrictions. Odiham in Hampshire has seen no rain for the last six weeks & I have only recorded 2mm. The African Rock has actually had more rain in that time lol.

Latest update from the US Drought Monitor: Here in New Jersey, the drought is getting worse. I am located barely outside D0 at the moment but we could definitely use some rain. I noticed very dry conditions while driving in Central Jersey this week, especially in Hunterdon and Somerset counties. That area is currently in the D1 category (Moderate Drought). It didn't look as bad in Middlesex and Monmouth counties but they are also in D1. Luckily that region did receive a soaking rain on Thursday morning so hopefully that provided at least temporary relief. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has issued a drought watch for the entire state and is encouraging water conservation: www.nj.gov/governor/news/news/562022/20220809b.shtml
