Significant ice storm is likely for the Midwest and northeast for New Year’s Day. Thank god nobody is driving to and from parties these days.

Snow fell late night and early morning. Artukainen reports a 3 cm depth which seems accurate. A nice surprise!

The same high that is giving Mongolia -40c temps is keeping Seoul at a frigid -8c high today. Which is like 10c or so below normal

Southern Lake Huron got some decent snow yesterday. It’s changed over into freezing rain now. Luckily I’m at my parents place for the holidays near the Tappan zee bridge. Chilly morning here, at 23 F (-5 C), with a chance for snow showers.

It’s raining right now in Buenos Aires, following the entrance of a cold front that made the temperature dip below 20°C/68°F for the first time after seven days. Tomorrow is expected a low of 13°C/55°F and afterwards a quick recovery to fully summery figures.
This is a rather ordinary cooling down, but this is part of the climatic features we were talking about yesterday. I just checked NY La Guardia and last summer they had 59 days in a row without going below 20°C/68°F, something absolutely impossible in Buenos Aires (last summer in NYC seems to have been very hot, though).
On the topic of the Buenos Aires summers being unbearably hot, well, they aren’t, it’s not the Persian Gulf, but I suspect they have a bigger standard deviation than many big cities in the US, Southern Europe and (of course!) East Asia, so the warmest half/tertil may be warmer than the ones of similarly hot summer places, or on par with places slightly hotter overall. I guess people tend to focus on the hotter days and overlook the refreshing ones… and exaggerate a lot.

Marcelo I wouldn't consider BA summers unbearable at all; they seem quite temperate to me, especially when you factor in colder periods like this. Only 2.5" (6.8 cm) of snow at my place. Fail.

After the rain, the sun came out in Buenos Aires and temperature rose to 28°C, but dew point plummeted to 9°C due to post-frontal winds. The chart speaks for itself.

The new year storm track is just absurd. The divide between warm and cold is a bit mind boggling. El Paso along the Mexican border is getting snow but Halifax in Eastern Canada sees mild rain. Like , WTF ?

.... aand it's gone. Temp now 4C and snow turned to rain. You just got Northern Virginia'd. Today was a boring day weather-wise, morning low was 71 F, afternoon high was 80 F, cloudy and breezy all day. Lame as hell.
