No, it isn't mental at all. I suppose, Abana had the foehn wind, but regarding Sochi and Batumi, both are in sheltered locations, protected by Caucasus mountains from the North. This is worlds apart in terms of climate from the same latitude continental locations in China or USA exposed to subarctic conditions from the North. I'm aware that these aren't the same climates as the 42 N climates in the Eastern US, that doesn't mean that 31.6 C at 42 N in the middle of winter isn't extremely impressive. There's foehn-influenced climates at 42 N in the US as well, most have record highs in the 22-27 C range for January. I'm willing to bet that 31.6 C broke the old record high by quite a bit. I'm willing to bet by at least 5 C. Indeed, though Redding has reached 87°F in January before, but that's at 40.5°N, not 42°N.

So all the hype about this is exaggerated.

Redding is one of the warmest climates in the world at its latitude, and it still didn't quite as hot and it's further south by 100 miles. Definitely not exaggerated. You'd be hard-pressed to find any other climate in the world at the same latitude, regardless of continent, that has gotten anywhere near that warm in the middle of winter before.

It's not really hype as these were record breaking temperatures, not normal at all. The high in Turkey broke the old record by 4.1C, that is incredible. It's the same weather system that caused record breaking temperatures over the weekend in Tunisia, Libya & Malta & near record breaking in Sicily & Greece too.

^ Did it break the old record in that town by 4.1 C, or the entire country's January record?

The latitude at which the record-breaking locations are found!!!
Abana, Turkey: 31.6°C --> 42°N Batumi, Georgia: 25.3°C --> 41.5°NSochi, Russia: 24.0°C --> 43.5°NImpressive! A 42°N place had a warmer high than here at 0.5°N near sea level in January!

Abana is on the north coast of Turkey, I bet the previous daily record high for January 12th at that location was at least 10 C cooler than that 31.6 C figure.

Yep, all the records that have been broken over the last few days have been remarkable. In Tunisia the new January record high of 33.8C beat the previous national record by 2.5C & in Malta we beat the old record by 3.0C, this is incredible.

Really nice winter day today with a high of 45 F and sun. But, freeze thaw potholes were horrible.

We got a bunch of freezing rain late this morning but then it warmed up and the sun came out, so that was pretty nice. It's a bit windy but not yet near the massive gusts we were told to expect. Perhaps that will come overnight.

Lol a crazy heat record is broken in January at a relatively high latitude.
The "hype" is well warranted, just like it would be if the Latvian record high in January would be beaten by 4C. :DDDD

We now have a blizzard warning in effect, in addition to the wind warning and snow squall watch. The snowfall isn't that heavy but the wind is ferocious and blowing it everywhere and causing very poor visibility. Crazy night!

Jesus, just saw there's a 91 km/h wind gust with 72 km/h sustained winds in Saskatoon, crazy windy! Here it's a kind of cool and rainy night, 62 F (16.7 C) with moderate rain at the moment. Actually feels cooler than the temperature suggests, gonna be cooler tomorrow than it's been the last few days, high of 70 F (21.1 C) predicted and dropping down to 51 F (10.6 C) at night.

Very narrow (and mild) temperature range across the province at the moment, warmest place is Yorkton 1.5C, coldest is Uranium City at -5.8C. Not often that you see that.
