The poorest people live in eastern Latvia and the weather reflects it. Lows in Latvia last night: Looks like the Daugava river is frozen for the first time since early 2019. It is sunny at least.

As the weather service is publishing the previous day's data here the next day and also the coldest temperatures were measured on the evening of January 16th I will now correct my post:
The coldest on 16th was Jõgeva in east of the country with -24.6c which is also the country´s lowest temperature. My nearest station recorded -21.6c (fourth place in the country).
The highest minimum temperature in the country was -2.8c, in the north west of the country, at Ristna.
Well, at least it was sunny.

The lowest temperature at my station in south east of the country was -20.9c, which was also the lowest one in the whole country. Surprising that Narva isn't the coldest.

Morningrise I found these pics from somewhere in Saskatchewan. Snowballs made from the wind! How cool is that. I heard about that! Didn't see any in my neighbourhood unfortunately, but still a very cool phenomenon.

The Met Office has issued an "Amber" warning for heavy rain - and Sheffield is inside the area in question. Serious flooding likely to occur.
This couldn't happen at a worse time.
"What to expect
Homes and businesses are likely to be flooded, causing damage to some buildings Fast flowing or deep floodwater is likely, causing danger to life Delays and some cancellations to train and bus services are likely Spray and flooding probably leading to difficult driving conditions and some road closures A good chance some communities cut off by flooded roads Power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses likely"

Quite nice today, 64 F (17.8 C) and partly sunny as of noon. The lows at the reporting stations were in the 50-54 F (10-12.2 C) range, so likely about 47-48 F (8.3-8.9 C) here. Pretty nice! This winter actually has felt like we've had a nice break from the heat.

It turns out that we have repeated the cold record from 17 January 1940 today in Jelgava. The last thing we needed in this pandemic.

-10.2c, light snow at 23:00. The cold is weakening as today the country's westernmost station was just a bit over zero. (But not here) On Friday evening when it was very cold there were light pillars in the sky which is a rare cold weather phenomenon. They were quite blurry, I tried to zoom and now they are even more blurred on the photo than they actually were.
