September 2020 SummaryA warm and dry month, chiefly due to the unusually stable early half of the month—i.e. lack of frontal activity. However, later in the month a fairly strong westerly front lowered the average substantially, from 7° / 15° C (record warm) down to 6° / 13° C, and brought a notable amount of snowfall (23rd–26th Sep). Anomalies (BoM Obs)Mean Maximum = 13.2° C (+0.9° C) Mean Minimum = 6.0° C (+1.5° C) Precipitation = 90.8 mm (–23.0 mm)

Average temperatures vs 1991-2020 (11-20)Average high: +0.4 (-0.1) Average mean: +0.6 (-0.1) Average low: +0.4 (-0.1) Rainfall vs 1961-1990: 122% Sunshine vs 2002-2018: 108% A pretty alright month, with most values very close to average, with the largest deviation being the rainfall which was 22% above average. First half was a bunch of sunny high diurnal days with chilly nights and very consistent 17-18'C highs. Pretty decent. The other half was the opposite with cold and cloudy days with mostly mild nights. Only one frost was recorded at the airport, a -0.9'C on the 25th, which is pretty late for the airport station. Very few places in the city actually recorded any freezing temperatures however, and most likely only a few places even recorded any ground frost. The Uni rooftop station got down to 3.1'C as its coldest temperature, and I actually happened to be outside that night, right during the time when the airport recorded its low. The temperature was 3'C where I live, and I couldn't see anything close to frost anywhere. While being a pretty decent month, it was a lot less decent compared to the deviations seen in southern Sweden. And looking at the year so far, Umeå has had above average rainfall, and lots of sunshine, whereas the stations I've looked at in Southern Sweden, while having similar sunshine deviations, have all been very dry. South-Swedish stations:
A pretty warm September in Lund (2.5 days have data extrapolated from a nearby station operated by the agricultural agency (LANTMET) (That station averaged 0.7'C cooler highs and 1.5'C cooler lows for the 27.5 days the two stations were co-active, so I added that onto the temperature readings of the LANTMET station for the missing days). Highs and lows were 1.4'C and 0.4'C above average compared to 2002-2018. For the year as a whole, I think temperatures are at least top 3 as of yet, and while sunshine deviations are a little lower than in Umeå, they've had a pretty dry year. Stockholm had a pretty warm September as well with a high and low deviation of 0.9'C and 0.5'C respectively compared to 2002-2018. A little over half the precipitation, and a similar sunshine deviation as Umeå. For the year as a whole, I believe Stockholm also has had a top 3 warmest year so far. Sunshine deviation is about the same as Umeå, or slightly less, but while the two cities average the same precipitation annually, Umeå has like 40% higher precipitation so far. Svenska Högarna: Despite being a very maritime station, its deviations were actually a lot lower than both Stockholm and Lund, even though August was very warm all over Sweden. Highs and lows were only 0.2'C and 0.4'C above the 2002-2018 average. Precipitation was only about a fourth of the 1961-1990 average. (Although 2002-2018 has been 31% drier than 1961-1990 there, so the climate has definitely seemed to have gotten a lot drier in recent years). Sunshine was actually average or below average here however. (Sunshine data is only available since 2007, but the 2007-2018 average is 197h, and the nearby island coastal stations of Visby and Hoburgen on Gotland island average 200 and 199h for 2002-2018). This is the first month of the year that has had sunshine below the 2007-2018 average. Meaning sunshine totals are already up to 2238h (2007-2018 average is 2170 for the whole year). This is really about the same deviation as Umeå and Stockholm. In 2018, Svenska Högarna broke the all time annual sunshine record in Sweden (and Northern Europe?) with 2407h. Unless all three remaining months are very cloudy, this record is likely to be broken again this year seeing as Oct+Nov+Dec averaged 198h 2007-2018

Turku was above average, mostly thanks to the Indian Crummerlike conditions late in the month. The record high was recorded on the 27th, which is extremely rare for September. Precipitation was normal.
Highest high: 22.7C (27th) Highest low: 14.6C (4th) Lowest high: 12.9C (17th) Lowest low: 3.3C (20th)
Deviations from 91-19 normals:
high: +1.4C mean: +1.5C
low: +1.5C precipitation: 93%
No frost or snow. 2 weak thunderstorms on the 3rd and 4th.
Deviation from mean temps by every 3rd of the month (since 2003 only):
I: -0.1C II: -0.5C III: +3.6C

September 2020 was a bit above average and an overall very pleasant month aside from some fairly chilly days toward the middle of the month. We did have a few temperature extremes, exceeding 31C on the hottest day and hitting a low of -7C one night as well but overall temperatures were quite mild. We had 14 days at or above 20C (16 if you round up temperatures to the nearest half-degree). It was also slightly drier than usual, and probably close to average sunshine (those stats will be out in a few days). Average high: 19.4C (normal: 18.3C) Average low: 4.0C (normal: 4.5C) Daily mean: 11.7C (normal: 11.4C) Highest high: 31.1C (Sept 11th) Highest low: 12.6C (Sept 20th) Lowest high: 10.4C (Sept 7th) Lowest low: -6.9C (Sept 8th) Precipitation totals: 23.6mm (normal: 35.4mm) Precipitation days: 7 (normal: 8.3)

Here's 2020 at the Uni station It's on a roof top, so it's got it's flaws. Night time temperatures tend to be very similar to the mildest parts of the town. I can't really comment about the daytime temperature because I don't have access to any thermometer with proper radiation cover. But considering March-Sep only average about 0.5'C higher highs at the Uni station, it can't be that off (keep in mind that the airport station was offline for most of May, so those stats are just an estimation). That's a pretty normal difference when comparing city stations with airport stations in Sweden. Honestly, looking at these stats, they seem like a very reasonable representation of what the warmest parts of town would've experienced this year, with most parts of the town lying somewhere inbetween the two stations. Though I would say that most are closer to the uni station than the airport station. Some interesting stats are that the average high during winter was higher at the airport, and the airport actually had a higher highest temperature this year at 29.3'C vs 29.1'C.

September in Malta was above average, with minimum temperatures especially higher. Rainfall was above average here & well above average at Luqa & Msida as central parts of the Island had a thunderstorm on the 12th which caused flash flooding, while here it remained completely dry. There were further thunderstorms on the 13th & 14th across the whole Island, the bulk of the months rainfall came from these 3 storms. Sunshine was below average. Stats from my PWS in St. Paul's Bay Av.Mx 29.1C (+0.5C) Av.Mn 24.8C (+1.1C) Mean 27.0C (+0.8C) Highest Max 31.0C (1st) Lowest Min 20.6C (29th) Lowest Max 26.0C (26th) Highest Min 27.6C (1st) Rainfall 77.4mm (115%) Days with Rain 10 Max Rain in Day 33.8mm (14th) Days with Thunder 6 Sunshine 237.0hrs (84%) Max UV 9.4 (3rd) Min UV 6.0 (28th)
