If you had to spend the summer (Dec-Feb) on an Antarctic base, which of the two options would you choose? Even though I'm not a fan of extreme cold I would still go for Vostok: 1. It's a unique climate with that much summer sun even ignoring the winter cold. You can basically always see the sun, day and night. 2. Yes, it's extremely cold, but the sun/dryness would presumably add a few degrees to the feel of the place unlike the drizzle and gales of the other one 3. You'd be spending most of your time there indoors in a heated base anyway because there's nowhere to go, so the outside temperature is less of a factor. At least it would be more cheerful looking out of the window at Vostok. 4. At least you're guaranteed a proper exotic-looking frozen landscape, Orcadas summers seem like constant slush and freeze-thaw while still feeling unpleasant - the worst of both worlds.

Orcadas for livable temps.

ABRNW, is that you?
Surely only Kaul would choose option 2.

ABRNW, is that you? Surely only Kaul would choose option 2. Remember we're talking about three months and not forever though. Going to the Antarctic would be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, wouldn't it be better to be able to say that you'd lived through through months of -30C to -40C, 24-hour sunshine and seen otherworldly landscapes up close than "Oh, I lived in Antarctica for three months and it was grey and miserable and not actually all that cold"?

I think people would be more impressed by me coming back and triumphantly declaring that Antarctica ain't all that cold.
I could also take photos of myself in shorts and T-Shirt, Kaul would the use the picture to suggest that Antarctica isn't that cold after all.

Well that's true, plus you could make shitloads selling your pictures of snowless rocky Antarctic outcrops to the tabloids. "ANTARCTICA MELTS IN LATEST GLOBAL WARMING PANIC!!"

In Orcadas, those summers would in fact be very similar to Scanian/Copenhagen winters, with an additional bonus of near perpetual daylight. Of course that's the winner, even though the 26 degree-something perpetual sun in Vostok might be exciting in the off-chance a day makes -17C

Can't be that bad over there

Can't be that bad over there That must've been me badly misremembering Svalbard's peak sun angle then The big shame about the Orcadas summer though is that there's little use for a roughly 50 degree sun angle there

Vostok is better and more interesting. 24/7 sunshine and very cold temperatures would be very cool to experience, whereas very little sunshine and temps around 0C would be quite boring.

Vostok. Nothing whatever about Orcadas could suggest summer or brightness.

Vostok. Nothing whatever about Orcadas could suggest summer or brightness. I agree. While at least Orcadas doesn't have deadly temperatures, it's a truly awful climate that would feel colder than it looks anyways. Like previously mentioned, it's not like your gonna be walking outside around there regardless, your gonna be inside so it may aswell be sunny out the window

Ridiculous climate battle from the past, brought back to life!
Terrible options, Vostok is unlivable. Its literally an C- versus F.
