.SYNOPSIS... Periods of isolated showers and thunderstorms remain possible today as our area remains between persistent inland troughing and high pressure well offshore. A more typical summerlike pattern Sunday through much of the coming week with surface high pressure building in stronger from the east. A deteriorating cold front could approach the area late next week.
&&
.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/... As of 6:45 AM Sat...Forecast remains on track.
Inland troughing and high pressure offshore pattern remains in place today, continuing to provide moisture advection aloft across the FA. Mid level shortwave that triggered showers and T-storms offshore this morning will depart with limited upper level support in its wake. Mid level trough will dig across the NE, but forcing will overall be weak. As a result, morning coastal convection will clear out and transition into only an iso shower and storm coverage inland by the aftn, with 20-30% POPs warranted at most. Coastal locales will be dry this afternoon behind a sea breeze that develops and moves inland. Highs today in the mid 90s.
&&
.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 AM SUNDAY/... As of 4:10 AM Sat...Trough aloft weakens overnight, becoming less prominent. As a result, most showers/T-storms that do develop will fizzle out with the loss of daytime heating, though an isolated shower or storm can't be completely ruled out. Lows will be in the low to mid 70s.
&&
.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/... As of 4 AM Sat...A transition back to a more seasonable pattern will occur early next week, with a couple of relatively dry days possible mid-week. An upper shortwave could bring a return to a more active pattern late next week.
Sunday through Tuesday...PWAT expectations for Sunday into early next week have trended down a bit over the last several global model cycles. Weak troughing aloft will keep POPs near to slightly above normal, but no pronounced features will keep a mainly diurnal trend to any POP forecast each day. Temps within a couple degrees of normal each day, with afternoon thunderstorm coverage providing the main day-to-day variability.
Wednesday through late next week...High pressure ridges to our south Wednesday, with low level flow developing more of a westerly component, likely bringing the warmest and driest days of the period Wednesday and Thursday given the limited convergence along the resultant sea breeze being pinned closer to the coast and more continental airmass. This would also bring above normal temps.
Then, late week, a cold front associated with low pressure lifting across the north will slide toward the area, increasing the low level gradient and moisture convergence, with another active period likely.

At what point does the NWS start using these "hot" pictos in their forecasts? I guess it kinda depends on the location? For the record I don't think it serves any purpose other than looking fancy (ditto for the "cold" one), but hey let's use all the pictos at hand. A year old post, but yeah it's relative and depends on the location's climate (e.g. for here, from what I've noticed, the "hot" icon is used for temps >=97°F)
