This thread is heartbreaking. Wish I lived in Darwin, instead of this stupid cold stormless hyper-dry hyper-stable southerly infested muppet hole.

What an awesome sight and sound that must be in real life. I guess it makes dealing with that relentless heat worth it.
Love this thread btw.

That it does....'Twas an epic ( even by Darwin standards ) storm last night. With the extreme DP's, you just know something is gunna happen........ Monsoon forecast to re form in the warm seas to our North in the next few days, so expecting an increasing rain outlook. Bring it on !

This thread is heartbreaking. Wish I lived in Darwin, instead of this stupid cold stormless hyper-dry hyper-stable southerly infested muppet hole. The trouble is, May through to Sept is pretty well the same as a dry down south summer ( less the sub 10c nights and sub 25c days ).Boring as batshit generally.....

Mmmmmmm, something brewing up in the Gulf ? Despite the forecast ? If this 'low' tracks slowly across the Top End next week, one would expect some significant rain totals before the end of the month.

From local forecasting guru, 'Pilko' "Good morning trendsetters .. Dare I say it but itβs almost nice to see the sun. I said ALMOST π€ Anyhow if you are residing in the top part of Australia, the wet season has been interesting to say the least and itβs only going to get more interesting over the coming week or so. The monsoon trough is currently to the west of the Australian mainland and along that trough is a developing tropical low NW of Broome and another further West. Both these lows will develop into cyclones in the coming hours. Lucas followed by Marian. The one closest to WA will push SW and then hook around to the SE over the next couple of days, threatening the Pilbara coast and dumping a lot of valuable rain across its path. This will eventually send moisture across the southern states but I will do a separate write up about that later. Once this crosses the coast I would expect the Monsoon trough to βsnapβ back to the north of the Australian mainland, with it again becoming quite active across the northern GOC and stretching back into the Coral Sea, which is still reasonably active from our drunken mate Kimi π€£ This is going to ramp up our weather across the Top End quite markedly, in fact today will be the quietest day for a good week or so, hence I have gone and sprayed the weeds already .. There is a chance of a low developing about the northern GOC once the monsoon redevelops in that area but at this stage there is no cause for concern. Darwin and surrounds today should be mostly fine, with the chance of some weather pushing in from the east late today. The last few days the weather has been drifting in from the NNE but the ESE steer is approaching from the East, especially as the developing Low off WA tracks further away. So get that washing done today and any other outdoor jobs, because itβs going to get mouldy and sunlight is going to become quite a rare commodity π Best time of the year ... I love it π Have a great day . And yesterday's GFS run ( which tends to exaggerate somewhat in the deep north Tropics ) "Just for amusement sake... Imagine if the scenario on tonight's run of the GFS model came off lol This almost certainly won't happen, but it's a good example of some of the craziness that goes through the minds of weather models when the MJO pays a visit.

Nice photos, do those monsoon squalls usually bring the 10-20mm range, or does the monsoon squall line need to stall to pick up the 80+ figures?

Nice photos, do those monsoon squalls usually bring the 10-20mm range, or does the monsoon squall line need to stall to pick up the 80+ figures? Depends on the speed on which they pass over us. The slow moving storms/systems dump the heavier falls. The squall pictured yesterday dropped about 13mm in half an hour, but the residual cloud has meant light rain until about 3.00am this morning and 35mm rain all up. A deep monsoonal flow can mean several dozen squall lines coming through, some only last 5 or 10 mins, then 20 or 30 mins later another one passes. Those kinda days can bring the +100mm falls too.

A typical monsoonal squall screaming in from the Arafura Sea just now at Gunn Point ( a little to the east of Darwin )| Pic/images/text by Nikko Gilbert. "A proper off the ocean Monsoon showers incoming. Amazing how much of a punch this little shower is giving. Gust in excess of 56.9kph (will be higher, just my weather station doesn't pick up the strongest gust unless it happens to transmit the data at the exact right time) but still amazing...these things are stronger then thunderstorms in some cases".
