Was scrolling around streetview and realised that Highway 20 in Oregon cuts entirely across the state and has a variety of climates. From Coast to the border with Idaho they are as follows. A classic PNW coastal climate, wet in winter, cold summers with occasional heatwaves scattered throughout the milder months. A more standard, lowlands OR climate. Strong med pattern with sunnier, stable summers. Top of the mountain range that divides the wetter west from the drier east. Lots of orographic lift and heavy snowfall. Summers are cold as fuck. Becomes very dry as soon as you descend into the plains near Bend. Sunny with high diurnals in the high sun season. A bit snowier than Bend and in general more continental than Bend, with warmer summers and colder winters. The climate with the hottest average maximums annually, also has the hottest summers by a decent margin. Easily the driest climate and snowfall is very low for how cold it is in winter. I like none of these particularly much, it comes down to the general "okay mix of stuff" with Corvallis and the good summers of Ontario. I guess I'll go Ontario by a whisker.

Yeah I agree, tough choice between those two. But Iβm take 3.5 months of colder temps for a warmer rest of year. Ontario it is.

Santiam Junction gets my vote, with Burns coming in at 2nd, and Bend a close 3rd. I've been to all these locations. Good thread!

Ontario Municipal Airport is easily the least gay of those.

Santiam Junction is not Santiam Pass (the actual Cascade Crest dividing the west side and east side). The actual Santiam Pass is higher up and a little colder: wrcc.dri.edu/cgi-bin/cliMAIN.pl?orsant Also, Sisters is unfortunately not an option. Sisters has the best climate on Highway 20. Burns is probably the best out of this lot, has good elements from both Bend and Ontario. Corvallis is a snowless/winterless Willamette Valley borehole, Newport is Eureka lite with more rain, and Santiam Junction is too cold outside of winter (although winters there are actually epic).

Santiam Junction
By far the best winters, although summers are awful. IMO winters and more importantly, lushness, have a greater say as to what's a good climate.
Also, lovely high-effort thread ππ»

Ontario. It's very dry and has a cold winter and annoying summer lows, but its summers are by far the best of the options here and that's the deciding factor. Newport =

Tough choice between Santiam Junction and Burns, as I find Burns to be a more well-rounded climate, but that snowfall in Santiam Junction (and Santium Pass that omegaraptor linked is even more epic) is too good to pass up. I'll choose Santiam Junction / Santiam Pass.

Corvallis. Not quite as mild as Newport in winter but only slightly colder while being significantly warmer the rest of the year.

Burns. I like how Corvallis gets more rain, but it just seems like it would be a boring place weather-wise.

Corvallis. It has ample rainfall and doesn't have below freezing record lows in the summer.

Corvallis is the best option on the list.
