Two stations on the exact same latitude, but on opposite sides of the range—one exposed to the prevailing upwinds on the inland slopes, and another, downwind on the coastal plain. Hunters Hill on the left; Cooma Airport AWS on the right (marked 983 m and 932 m on the map below, respectively): • Windward (Hunters Hill) • Leeward (Cooma Airport AWS) IMO, Hunters absolutely shits all over Cooma due to a far superior precip pattern and significantly colder winter maxes, as well as heavy rain/snow events as opposed to boring drizzle/flurries. Cooma also gets cucked very badly with westerly frontal systems: e.g. on 28 May 2000, Hunters had a max temp of just –0.7° C, whereas Cooma had a pathetic 7.3° C max by comparison. Summers are also significantly hotter in minima, and more stable (and sunnier)—with Hunters having recorded a 27.0° C min temp (!) in Feb 2020.

Difficult. I prefer windward slightly more on these terms:
1) Highs: Windward 2) Lows: Leeward 3) Precip: Windward 4) Record highs: Windward 5) Record Lows: Leeward

I prefer Cooma (or leeward) for being drier, and having warmer afternoons.

Indications of a carefully thought-out climate battle. Take note 👍🏻 Lop-sided climate battles can get fucked.

Cooma. Leeward areas in SE Australia are much more preferable for me -- But that depends -- I still prefer Dubbo (windward) over Sale VIC (leeward).

Mind you, a little unfair to compare Dubbo and Sale. Dubbo 32.25*S and Sale 38.11*S. But yeah I prefer Dubbo myself. Sale and those Bass Strait squalls are the pits.

Mind you, a little unfair to compare Dubbo and Sale. Dubbo 32.25*S and Sale 38.11*S. But year I prefer Dubbo myself. Sale and those Bass Strait squalls are the pits. Fair enough. But when it comes to the towns near or on the slopes, I'd still prefer the leeward ones by far. So, i.e. Bombala > Batlow. However, as one gets further from the slopes, like towards the coast and the inland plains, I'd lean towards the windward areas. So, i.e. Griffith > Wollongong. Why? Because they're not wet, whereas the coast gets very drenched. But the windward areas on the slopes are pretty wet (especially in the winter) and the leeward ones that aren't exposed to moist easterlies (i.e. Cooma, Nimmitabel) are relatively dry throughout the year. So I would naturally go with the latter in this case. I would also include Bega, Batemans Bay and Narooma, even though they're on the immediate coast, except that they're not very rainy. Either way, it really depends on the specific city. I hope I'm understood.

Hunters Hill for better summer mean temps. Slightly too wet but Cooma is also a bit on the dry side.

Fucking windward wins with this one, for sure! I'd doubt that the leeward gets real snowcover in December and January, so that definitely cancels that out.

Hunters Hill
Still not a great climate, but Cooma's lows and precipitation totals are abysmal.

Leeward without even looking. Guaranteed to have more pleasant and sunnier winters.
only downside I can think of is much lower storm action .. but being in NSW it probably still gets phenomenal storm activity any ways.
