We'll do this by State and Territory.....where would you rather live and eke out a miserable existence ? Where you pay double for the bare necessities in life ie: food, beer diesel and ammo. Where the ratio of men to women is about 4 : 1. And the women are mostly tougher than the men...... Marble Bar, Western Australia ( 178m asl, 21.1*S ) Oodnadatta, South Australia ( 121m asl, 27.5*S ) Alice Springs, Northern Territory ( 545m asl, 23.7*S ) Birdsville, Queensland ( 46m asl, 25.9*S ) Bourke, New South Wales ( 106m asl, 30.1*S ) Manangatang, Victoria ( 68m asl, 35*S ) Not 'Outback' per say, but they promote themselves as Victoria's only outback town. Climate data from nearby Ouyen. Waratah, Tasmania ( 609m asl, 41.5*S ) Substitute 'outback' for 'hillbilly' ( think Aussie 'Dueling Banjos'/'Deliverence' ) and for having a c**t of a climate !

Marble Bar for me. Summers aren't that much hotter than the others (except the last two) but the winters are much warmer.

Nice climate battle! ππ»
Very hard choice between Ouyen and Waratahβ¦I very begrudgingly went for Waratah, due to the epic snowy winters, and overall frequently exciting weather, making up for the complete lack of summer. I just can't do desert climates.
As for livingβ¦unfortunately, Waratah is in bread (as all of Tassie is). Although it's by far the least remote of the lot and easiest to live.

Manangatang for being the only climate there with a decent temperature profile. At a very distant second place would be the Tasmania climate. All the others are unliveably hot in the summer for me.

Marble Bar even if summers are a bit too hot. They aren't really that much hotter than Oodnadatta, Birdsville and Alice Springs but with much better winters. Winters in Marble Bar look beautiful

I'd say Bourke is the best of the bunch; its average temperatures are excellent and it isn't completely arid. Honorable mention to Alice Springs, though the elevation makes the winter temps crap for the latitude. The recurring theme of too little annual precipitation (excluding Waratah ) is exactly as I would have expected given the location.
